For I-:i.kctkic Lights The council,
at its meeting hist Monday night, granted
to the Me Connick Co. a thirty-five year
franchise to operate an electric lighting
plant in St. Helens, and just as soon as
the machinerery can be procured and in
stalled this city will have as good n
lighting system as any small commun
ity cau have, as it will be in the hands
of men who have great interests here
and whose every effort will naturally be
to do whatever is best for the interests of
the community. Ordinarily thirty-five
years is a long time lor which to grant a
franchise, but in this case the franchise
is not exclusive and the city contracts
for light for only five year terms, so that
the continuance of the contract and the
financial success of the venture depends
upon the quality of the service rendered
and the reasonableness of the rates. We
congratulate the council upon its de
cision. Florence Yank w as arrested Tuesday
