The expanse account of the assessor
last year for in als, horse Jure and feed,
m shown by the records-, amounted to
$150. Hot one' cent of this but what
was just, properlv receipted for, and
wonld have been allowed br any reason
able cionty court. It was all ir.euned
in discharge of his official duty and was
necessary. But Mr. Niekerson and
others cried graft. Mr. Nickerson'a
share ot this would be about one mill.
Bat there was something doing over
in the Seualera Valley. A public meet
ing was called and a letter composed by
Mr. ickeron was "indorsed by a
number of taxpayers who evidently had
not given its statement very careful
consideration.
Represemative Conyers introduced the
bill cattin? out the section of the la
providing for payment of the a?sess r's
necessary expenses, and secured its
passage in the bouse. Now comes the
Clatskanie Chief of last week, and fays:
"The House passed this measure but
when it reachtd tlie senate lobbying
friends interceded."
This is practically a charge that Mr.
Clark, the present astessor, m le a
"lobbyist's fight anin-t ttie Conyers bill
in order 10 siVd his field deputies the
immense sum oi (150 per year.
The senate put the expense clause
back in lb bill, but the economical

reducing espenses and helping Mr.

allowed the assesiir $225 for annua! ex
peases, which is $75 m re than he had

On this day the resolutions for spe

to defray the expense thereof were duly

Mr. Harry Fugh, an early pioneer of
the Pacific Coast, died at Scappooe
Feb. "23rd, 1909. Mr. Fogh was born In
Finchamstead.Beikshlre, England, Jan,
5, 1833, and came to Vmerica at the age
of 21. He crossed the plains with an
emmigrant train to California in 1862.
Leaving California be traveled to Idaho
and there engaged in the mining but!

by a sailing vessel around Caps Horn.

Kansas where he married Dor C.
Weber. Soon after hi marriage he
