Last week we blamed the dam for the
color of the fluid we are cplled upon to
use for drinking and cooking purposes;
but now we find it is all due to Dan

in about one week's time, when tbe
water will resume its pellucid clearness.

California Street, San Francisco, . sole
owners of the St. Helens Mill Company,
ire men wbo have been engaged In . the
lumber business as shippers and owners
if their own vessels for years. They
own a fleet of steamers composed of tbe
Vosemtte, 950,000 feet; tbe Yellowstone.
400,000 feet ; tbe Shoshone, 750,000 feet ;
tbe Cascades, 650,000 feet; and tbe
schooner Ensign, 850,000 feet. These
boats are familiar to our people, aa they
have all loaded tips here during tbe past
two years. They also carry passengers.
and heretofore they bave transferred
passengers at Goble and Portland, but
hereafter tickets will be sold from Cali
fornia points direct to St. Helens and
those bound for the Seattle Fair, for
instance, will be landed here and take
the train at Houlton. This fleet of ves
sels handles for tbe McCormicks, more
ies axd timbers than are bandied by any
other company on tbe Pacific Coast,
manifests f - rover a hundred million feet
of lumbe having passed through tbe
company's office at SanFranctsco during
be p ist year. The company holds here
nearly a mile of water front on th river
and slough, with thirty feet of water at
the shipping dock, and ibey consider
they have a millsite that can not be
rivaled any where, and tbey are building
a mill that will be in tbe Crt class of
lumber producers. The immediate ex
penditure upon tbe mill running through
the construction of the plant, docks, etc.,
will, be about 200,0U0, Allis Chalmers
machinery being u.'ed, including 10-foot
band saws, large edgers, automatic air
trimmers, automatic sorting tables, plan
ing and lath mill, employing id yards
and mill, about 200 men. Nothing but
white labor will be employed and pref
erence will be given to married men, as
the McCormicks believe those wbo have
families and will build homes here are
tbe ,'most desirable employes, Tbe Mc
Cormick Co. also ow n and control the
California Pole and Piling Company,
with yards at Seattle, Everett, and Port
San Pablo, (Fan Francisco) the largest
institution of the kind on the Pacific
Coast; also tbe Hicks Hauptman Co.. of
San Francisco, which deals exclusively
in mining timbers. Tbe home office of
tbe St. Helens Mill Company will be at
Sr. Helens, and its manager, Mr. H. F.
McCormick, believes the mill will be
completed by the first day of next July.
It is cause for congratulation, not only
for St. Helens, but for the surrounding
country, that we are to bave a first class
mill here, and, moreover, that it is to
be managed by a resident of our city,
who will taaea live interest in the pros
perity of the community .
