INVESTIGATE EXPRESS RATES.
Stat Railroad Comminion Ha Fancy
Figure to Start With.
Salem, Or., May 20. An investigation
ha been started by the railroad com
miaaion regarding expret rate en
forced by the Well, Fargo and the
Pacific cxpres companies in Oregon.
Some startling revelation have been
brought to light that will likely de
mand the attention of the commission
in the near future.
Cotnirarnoni have been made show
ing the relative charge on line in Or-
cvon and the charge in oilier ttate for
viitiilar distances and for the same c ass
of gixxli. From Portland to Siskiyou,
a distance of .IMS miles, the Well-
r argii express company charge a mer
chandise rate, of $2.7.1 for loo pounds,
while for Ihe wine distance in Miksottri
a rate has been established by the Mis
loitri railroad commission, which is
now iu force, of 'Z for 100 pounds. The
iiierciiaiiuisc rate in icxas lor a sim
ilar distance is $8.03.
I lie rates charged by the Pacific ex
press company are even more exorbi
tant according lo the figures given out
by the railroad commission. The Pa-
cttic express company operates out of
rorllaiiil east over the U. R. & N. For
410 niihs over the O. R. & N from
I v rtland to Huntington, the general
merchandise rale for loo pounds is $4.
For miles, or the same distance for
which thr Wclls Fargo charges $8.75
in Western Oregon, the Pacific express
company 111 l-.astcrn Oregon charges
compared with similar distance in
Missouri and Texas, the rates of the
Par ihc express company are extreme.
For 44u miles ill Missouri the general
merchandise express rate is $8.10 and
in Texas it is $8 30. In both these
siatet the rates have been fixed by
railroad commissions and have been ac
cepted by the express companies and
ire now in force. 1 be rales given are
for thr same classes of goods in every
instance.

Fruit Crop Will be Heavy.
Baker City. Unless exceptionally
cold weather should overtake this part
of the country there will be a large
fruit crop, according to men who are
heavily interested in fruit lands and or
chards. Tn the immediate vicinity of
Baker City fruit is necessarily slower
on account of the altitude, but over
in Pine and Eagle valleys it is far
advanced. Recent cold spells have not
damai'cil the crop materially.
Scouring Mills to Reopen.
rrndleton. It was announced a few
days ago that the wheels of the Pen
dleton scouring mills would be started
turninir about Tune 1. The uncertain
condition of the wool market is re
sponsible for the late start, but it
will not shorten the se ason's run. Sev
eral thousand pounds of wool are
now on hand and more is arriving
daily.

The ttnvertirmiit i.niriiii..r. t,-,..
cidrd to cement a section of the canal
there. It is estimated it will cost
$21,100 to complete the cement work
necessary. Owing to the strong flow
under the tracks, the company ha
kept track walkers constantly there
for several months. All train hav
run slowly over the place for some
time. Costly repairs will be made on
the O R. & N. track. Water will be
turned off the feed canal while the re
pairs are in progress.
Rare Specie of Duck.
Klamath Falls. Hunters on the
Klamath river near Teters landing
report the finding of a pair of red
ducks nesting among the tules. The
bird are small and supposed to be
cinnamon teal, a species of duck rarely
seen in this section. The pelicans
have returned in great number this
spring. The rapid growth of the city
and the settlement of the hills be
tween Lake F.wauna and the Upper
Klamath lake seemed for several years

Coo Find Oil.
Marshfield. The stir ;i :
Coos county, successfully held down
for several weeks past, has reached
the Stage that facts nnnm lnn., h-
kept from the public. Oil men have
tiien here on investigating missions,
and corporations and inrtividnaU lr,
quieuy oeen talcing options for sev
eral weeks. Actual crude oil has been
striick near Bandon, and gas has been
encountered in many places. Around
Coos Bay indications are sufficiently
strong to warrant large option and
extensive preparations for borings.
Open Gate at Hermiston.
Pendleton. With hundreds of en
thusiastic excursionists in attendance
and ideal weather prevailing, the head
gates of the" Umatilla irrigation pre
jeet were thrown open at Hermiston
last week. An excursion train of six
coaches left this place, bearing a large
number of representative business
men and farmers, as well as repre
sentatives from Milton, Freewater,
Weston and Athena.
Progressive Spirit at Cornelius.
Cornelius. The old schoolhouse in
Cornelius, which has so long been an
et-esore to the more enterprising por
tion of the people, has been torn down
and preparations are being made to
erect a new one, which will be a credit
to the city and district.
Stocked With Fish.
Baker City Thomas H. Parker, of
