THE PORTLAND IDEA
One (fiction of the Republican party In
Multnomah County expect to aopport
for nomination candidate for the Leglr
latnre who ign a pledge agreeing to
vote if elected , for that randidate for
United State Senator who hll receive
the largest umber of ot-atthe Jnnt
election, PEOVIDSD BE I A KIPt'BLICA.I.
If, for instance, Mr. Cake is the choice
at the primary, hot i defeated by Mr.
Chamberlain in the geneial lection, not
only will they vote for Mr. Chamberlain,
but, according to their pledge, neither
are thev under any obligation to vote
for Mr. Cake, who will have received a
great majority of the R'epubliian votes.
They will, in fact, be in a position, with
out breaking their pledge, to vote in the
legielature for anyone whom they e
fit. It i just exactly good as, and
no better than, no pledge at all, and th
only object in making It i to have the
way for the election of tome person who
would Und no chance whatever at the
poll. It woold I more honest if they
would aunounce themelves a being op
posed to the election of the United State
Senator by direct vote of the people
and in favor of the old method.
If they are in favor of the principle
of the Direct Primary La , with the ex
ception of Statement No. 1, why An they
not pledge themselv to vote for the
Republican choice at the direct primary
election?
Winter In Oregon.
(All rights reserved by author)
When the fog i 'round the mountains,
An the wheat is in the bin ;
All but some that' standing grimly
And a sproutin out agin.
An you hear a gentle patter
On the roof and winder pane ;
Your sure that winter comin
An' the ererlastin grain.
When the water's o'er the stabhle.
When the wind is wbisperin' low
And the mud above your ankle
Deep and soft where e'er you go:
When your wife stands in the door way
With a frown that' bard to beat,
Sayin' softly, but everely
Can't you ever clean your feet?
An the chickens stand demurely
fn the gentle patterin rain,
Can not scratch the muddy garden
But must live upon your grain:
When the sun for day together
Hides bis face behind the cloud,
An' the highway' lick and slushy,
An' the the teamsters' swearin loud.
Oh remember, it is Winter.
Oregon' most balmy time,
Farmers, wear your rain day clothing,
Poets, make your little rbvme.
Bv Jim.
