one or the unfortunate man's comrades,
niiaalng him, came back and took him
on to Portland Wednesday.
Mcsar. Clay Preacott and Tom Love-
Ince are running a drift on a lurco bodv
of iron ore that has been found on the
Lovelace ranch about four miles from
Rainier. The quality of the cronoinir
is excellent, running 48 per cent red
hematite, thesa-no kind of ore found in
the famous Mcsuba range In Minnesota.
It Is a soft ore and can be handled with
a .team shovel, thus saving a largo ex
pense In getting it out, Eaatern pur-
lies will soon be h;re to Investigate,
and as Mr. Preacott has worked for
years in the Mesaba rango he know,
whereof he speaks. He says: We
have tho quality and there is no ques
tion about the quantity." This is not
tho only place In the immediate vicinity
Rainier where vast bodies of ore
have been located. There are a dozen
other places. Just back of town there
is a vast tract of land that is similar to
the Meaaba rango, and people who have
seen both diatnets are not surprised at
the vant bodies of oro located in this
din'trict. '
The Rainier Iron Foundry has receiv
ed fcrder. from a Tucoma ship-building
firm for twenty-three caatings for oil
beater. It is not a very large order,
but it is noticeable as sh jwing that the
name and fame of the local fonndry ir
spreading end is attracting orders from
other cities of the coast. When the
mines of Columbia county are opened up,
a. they will be in a shorter time than is
genir.lly believed, Rainier will actually
"forge" to the front as a manufactur
ingcity, A young Norseman under the in
fluenoo of brendwein beeame unruly at
