NEW YORK'S GOVERNOR
Gov. Hushes' supervision over legis
lation has surprised Republicans as well
as Democrats, lie has vetoed 37 bill
his threat ol a veto induced the legisk'
ture to recall 197 measures, and has
allowed 250 bills to die unacted on
This shows that New York's executive
is not an eicht hour a dav man. He
. works ten or twelve hours every day
and he is doing something throughout
all of that time. His readiness witb the
veto recalls President Clevland's activity
in that direction, but Cleveland's veto
was directed chiefly against private pen
sion bills, while Hughes' hits measures
of larger importance.
This activity has created something
like consternation among the politicians.
He examines every measure which
reaches him. There is nothing per
functory about his performance. He
acta on the assumption that the people
of bis state put him in office to use all
the powers of his post to give them good
government. Nothing within the scope
of his official duties escapes his attention
Many of the Republican politicians have
turned against him. He is accused of
pernicious meddlesomeness, and the
party leaders on both sides are getting
somewhat uncertain as to whether he
ought to be called a Republican, a Dem
ocrat or a Mugwump. No other.' 5ew
York governoi within the memory of
anybody now alive has given so much
time to the duties of bis office.
But the people of his state stem to
like Governor Hughes. He is looming
np into national proportions. Already
the prophets ate beginning to coupie his
name with with the presidential candi
dacy. If the National Convention were
to meet to-day he would gtt many -votes.
Apparently, he is not thinking of the
the presidency, bat is doing the duty
which confronts him. This is tiie s
of an official that the people lik?. He
is making friend among all elements of
the people, though the politicians are
against him.'" As New Vo:k's Legisla
ture meets every year, he will have
abundant chances to do many -things
before the National Convention imcte
The country is following Gov. Huhta
coarse with a good deal of iuU-rest.

Washington, proposing to interest Sen
ator Pngh of Alrbama in his candidacy.
It was o o'clock in the morning when
Pettus reached the Washington station.
It was too late to go to bed, too early to
go to breakfast. Pettus deliberated a
moment and then decided the best thing
be could do aa to seek out Senator
I'ugu immediately and settle the matter
before partaking of an eye Opener.
It is hardly necessary to explain after
this introduction how ignorant of Wash

judicial candidate. He did not know
that senators seldom if ever retire be

that federal judgej are appointed on the the real defendant

purpose burned brightly in Mr. Pettus'
breast. Accordingly he repaired to the
hotel where Senator Pugh slept when
he could find nothing else to do.
The servant at the door remonstrated.
but Pettus was going to see Pugli and
that was all there was to it. The Ala
bama renator vanned, probably cursed
uiidr his breath a moment aad then
loaned a sleepy ear to the application.
When Pettus had stated his desire sim

his pillow, yawned again and went to

can be solved equally to the satisfaction
of the shipper, receiver and consumer in
