RAINIER.
A Narrow Eccapk. - What might
hava boon a very aerloua accident oc
curred at Mr. Cm, Rot-key' camp Uat
Sunday morning. No live were loat,
but it wa only by the greatest good
lock that at least ona man wa not
killed. The engineer left the camp with
two truck ahead of the engin and had
gone but a ahort distance when he loat
control and jumped off. Tha foreman
then look hold of the throttle and tried
to atop her, but could do nothing, and
aid to Mr. Joa. Ley, who wa also on
the angina, "She' gone," and jumped
atao. Then Mr. Ley, who la engineer,
tried to top her. A there I an eight
per cant grade at thi place ah had
gained considerable headway, and waa
going at th rat of about thirty mile
n hour. Th angina wa carrying 150
pound of (team, and a Mr. Ley looked
ahead ha aaw that the truck had bro
ken away from tha engine. Ha Imme
diately reversed her, but could do noth
ing, and stepped out juat a the draw
bar,, which remained coupled to tha en
girt, dropped, hit a tie and raised tha
front part of tho engine up and It top
pled ovor, unfortunately for Mr. Ley to
th aide on which he atood, burying him
under th engin. Mr. Ley ay th
butt he knew wa when ahe wa going
over. Th engineer and foreman cme
ruahtng down tha track, thinking of
eour Mr. Ley wa killed, but when
tho engine waa ufflciently ried he
crawled out from under, and, with the
encoptlon of a few ncratchee and brui
e. waa none th won for hi thrilling
experience. It will probably cost flv
hundred dollar to repair the dmg to
th engine.
