4 CRUISB AT LAST.
The county court, at its recent session
decided to advertise lorbi Is for ci rising
the timber land of Columbia County so
that the assessor ins; have a basis for
placing: a true valuation upon this class
of property. The Mist 1ms constantly
and earnestly advocate.! kucu a course,
and ire are glad the court has at hist
been brought to see its wisdom. Thous
ands ot dollars have ln lost to the
revenues of the county for lack of a
cruise, as it would be i m possible for any
assessor (o make a just estimate of the
value of timber without such a basis
Other counties have found that it pays
to have a cruise, and as Columbia h
one of the most densely timbered courv
ties in the State there is no doubt it will
pay here. We trust the county court
will see that the job is done thoroughly
and impartially. No mere estimate will
answer the purpose. Cheapness should
not be considered at the expense of good
, work, and those to whom the job is en
trusted should be carefuliv supervised
and their work checked tip by tome ex
pert employed by the county for that
purpose. There is an opportunity pre
sented for a grout !eal of jobb.'ry; but
it can be prevented by proper methods.
Moreover, the work should be pushed a;
rapidly as possible, in order that the
result may appear on the assessment
roll this year.

The Grangers of Columbia County
would like to know how tiiey are bene

this county they will do well to attend
the Foroonss here and get acquainted
with our people.
