CRUSHED ROCK SHORTAGE.
There has beei considerable agitation
in Portland of lute oil the question of
the city procuring a rock crushing plant.
This lias been due to the fact that it
was feared, owing to the extraordinary
dutnund for thla product, that a shortage
would lie produced. This problem has
teen solved. The Warren Construction
Company lias leased from Harry How
ard his rock quarry at St. Helena. The
company 1 now Installing there its
rock crushing plant, which hasucapacity
of 500 cublo yards every ten hours. The
rock will be loaded onto barges, trans
fered to Hortland and discharged into
the bunker at the foot of Ankney street.
It is believed that this will afford su'ffl
clent material to meet nil demands.

THE FIRST MATCH FACTORV.
A short time ago the Portland paper
announced that a match "factory would
be built in Portlandndaid that tlii
would be thereat match factory in Or
egon. From the following, taken from
an old newspaper clipping it would seem
tint tin was a mistake.
"In 1851), John Welch built a small
cnbin on 7th and Madison street in a
deep laviue. It a called a match
factory, he manufactured matches by
hand, the flrtt ever made in Portland."
It seems strange to read of anv-joe
building a small cabin In a deep ravine
at the corner of Seventh and Madison
treet. This is now a thriving part of
the city, covered with fine bnildinga.
And yt It was !es than 50 veais
ago that Welch made matches there in
li tie cabin, in what waa almost a
wilderres.

of pertinent anecdotes of the service;
In a natty which included prominent
officers of both the army and navy she
recently told this story:
"I was in the south, and a colored

was pleadii-g with one who was not a
member of his flock.
Oh, my dear brother, he begged why
don't yon come with me and join di

THE REAL CHINESE GONG.

Aston lalilnp:.
By tho way, did you ever hear a real
Chinese gong? I ilou't mean a hotel
gong, but one of those great moon
disks of yellow metal which have so
terrible a power of utterance.
A gentleuiau iu Bangor, north Wales,
who had a private museum of south
Pacific aud Chinese curiosities, exhibit
ed one to me. It was hatising amitt
FIJI spears beautifully barbed with
sharks' teeth, which, together with
grotesque New Zealand clubs of green
stone and Sandwich Inland paddles
wrought with the baroque visages of
the shark god, were depending from
the walls; also there were ludiati ele
phants In ivory, carry injt balls in their
carveu liellies, each ball containing
many other lulls Inside It.
The gong glimmered pale aud huge
and yellow, like the raooii risiug over u
southern swamp. My friend tapped
Its ancient face with a nititlled drum
stick, aud It commenced to sob like
waves upon a low bench. He tupped it
agttlu, nud it moaned like the wind In
a mighty forest of pines. Again, and It
commenced to roar, and v.-ith each tap
the roar grew deeper and deeper till It
seemed like thunder rolling over au
abyss lu the Cordilleras or the crash
ing of Thor's chariot wheels.
It was awful und astonishing as aw
ful. I assure you I did uot laugh at It
nt all. It Impressed me as something
terrible and mysterious. 1 vainly
sought to understand how that thin
disk of trembling metal could pro
duce so frightful a vibration. He In
formed me that It was very expensive.
