rorlty of Kelao and vicinity.
The imelt are a peculiar flah. Hatched
in the headwater of tho Cowlitz or
Sandy they return to the open aea In
the (pring. Returning in the fall and
winter they unfailingly enter the Cow
litz, nocking the old spawning ground
beyond the reach of fiahcrmen'a not.
They travel in (choola, or rather string,
the firt arriving at or near Kelao about
the Holiday. The run of fish ia moat
uncertain. Sometime they laat until
th middle of March and sometime they
top ihort in January.
So far thia aeaaon there have been
upwarda of 3000 boxes ahipiied from
Kelso, a total of 37,350 pound going by
cxprea in the month of January alone.
Carload shipments have been made in
year when imolt were plentiful and
cheap but lately the demand haa kep
up ao steadily that the flah are shipped
almost as fast a they can be taken from
the water.
Smelt have alway been so plentiful
that they have never needed protection
by law other than licensing fiahermen
and there ha never been any thought
or fear of their extinction entertained
by anyone who knew their hubita.

A Remarkablk Accident Mrs, Nels
Nelson, who lives on the river roau
about two miles from Kaimer. stepped
into Shorts market last Monday to buy
some smelt. She was told that the boat
had not come over from the CowliU and
went down to the wharf to look for it.
According to her story she thought her
skirt was looso. She placed her collar
ette, glasses and purse on a pile of lum
ber and stopped behind it to adjust her
skirt, and thatia the lasisne remcmoers

of the matter. From some cause she .
fell Into the water, and
was nrst seen

by a son of Clarenco Brooks, who gave
the alarm. Charles and ueorge miner,
D. A. Adams and L. Thompkins went
out after her and brought her to the
home of Mr. Brooks, whore sho was
skillfully treated and finally restored to
.m,.'imiHiir,aa. Mrs. Nelson fell into
the water from the Deitz dock and was
rescued at a point opposite tho Oregon
Kansas mill, having traversed nearly a
fifth of a mile. It would seem that her
clothes must have held her up, yet both
hands were filled "with mud when she
was taken from the water, indicating
that she must have gone to the bottom
of tho river. It was a most remarkable
occurrence and, of course, will never
bo fully explained.

Kalama have alway supported the
schools in a liberal manner and backed
her school board unhesitatingly in every
undertaking for the betterment of the
schools. And The Bullentin feels safe
in saying that the people have found
that it pays to do so. The Kalama
High School has 30 pupils enrolled, and
next year the enrollment will be more
than 50. The High School is of great
material advantage to this town, as
can readily be seen by a little figuring,

MAIL MAN TO GET MORE PAY.
The postoflSce appropriation bill of
which the house committee on postof
fices and post roads has completed will
curry
carry $209,130,561. This is the largest
amou.,t ever earrjed for the annual ex-
penditures of the postal service. The
total recommended in the bill is more

than 1,000,000 in excess of the amount
estimated for by the department and is
an increase of $17,609,5b2 over the cur
rent appropriation.
The salaries of postal clerks of both
city and rural carriers are increased to
a total of $7,0l0,000. Provision is in
serted in the bill for the classification
of postal clerks and the positions of
clerks and carriers are made inter
L-haneeable.
There are various provisions in the
bill intended to reduce the pay to rail
roads for carrying the mails. It is es
timated that this reduction will amount
to something like $12,000,000 a year.

A saving of $1,030,000 more is esti

all pay to roads tor hauling empty tacks
which it is estimated will save between

of its work and especially the facts
relative to the colonist rales to each
and every otie of the county superinten
dents throughout the State ol Oregon.
.Mr. Ackt-rnmn b-.Tteves that the
si'k-ndid opportunity offered the people
of Ihe Middle West to visit almost every
point in Oregrni at the low lute of $-5
should be put la-fore the school-', and
that all teacher in the state thould not
o 'ly inform themselves of the facts but
impart those (acts to their students.
This ia'e of $25 includes all Missouri
River points, St. Faul and contiguous
territory ; the rate from St, Louis is 30,
und from Chicago 3, and ticket w ill
be ou sale from March 1 to April 30. -There
is an absolute hunger for in
formation about Oregon throughout all
portions of the United States. In ad dition
to the many thousands that have
been coming since December, 3,750 in
quiries have been added within tlie l.ut
twelve (lavs. C-xis Hay is esiecially
active and the results are paying them
well for their expense in time and
money. CorvallU rco.-ivea more atten

Southern Oregon. Ralph Ackl. y, secre
tary to the Tillamook IVveh-p uent
League, has Issued a ersonnl litter,
which gives in a very brief and t ffeitive
way the resources of his city and county
and the rasults will certainly be gratify
ing. Many other points in Oregon are at
work and the commercial and induttral
bodies of the state should get out their
very best advertising matter aud into
the mails without delay.
The Portland Commercial Cltl b added
to this opportunity to increase the
population aud wealth of the state,
while the teachers and in some cases the
preachers nre making it their businiFS
to interest the citizens ol Oregon in in
viting those who live in the older
sections of the country to come out and
make their homes in the Heaver State.
