The spectacle of an ex-governor of
Oregon appealing at (lie State otpitol
for the purpoteof lobbying in the
t treat of a aetot thieves and perjurers
who attempted to steal the State's land
U certainly not a pleasing one, and ret
that is exactly what ex-Governor T. T.
Geer has been doing. The certificates
to the land were secured by peijury,
-and the State, bWng in po.-sei m of
evidence to this effect, refuses to issue
patents to the land. Now comes Mr.
Geer and urges that the State should not
only retum the nucey deposited but
should pay the Inn 1 thieves six per cent
interest on their intended investment.
We hardly believe the Legislature will
be guilty of passing to infamous a
measure, and if it does we are confident
that Governor Chamberlain will stand
between the people and the grafters.
They have no equitalde ground for such
a claim. Instead of beiug rewarded they
should be pUced behind the bars of the
penitentiary, and in morals there d-.ei
not seem to be any great difference be
tween them and their lobbyist. During
the last primary campaign the Mist very
strongly opposed the nomination of Geer
on the Republican ticket, and after the
election we were told that had he been
the nominee instead of James Withy
combe be would have been elected. We
did not believe it then and do not be
lieve it now; but even were it true we
would still be satisfied with our course.
A good man was defeated by a stroi ger
but not a better man. The Republican
party was not weakened by the result.
It will probably elect the next governor ;
but, whether it does or not, it wiil be iu
much better shape to go before the
people than if it bad elected a ninn who
is not ashamed to ose his gteat ability
in an attempt to help the land thieves j
Conaumate a raid upon the public treas
nry. The success of Mr. Geer'a scheme
would mean due notice that the State of
Oregon will compensate criminals for
any loss they may incur in an attempt
to steal the public lands Last Sunday
Oregon lan discusses the matter freelv
and completely, yet it presents a most
scalding indictment of the distinguish
lobbyist who has been hanored with the
highest office in the gift of the people of
the State and is now rewarding them by
standing in with the public piunderers.
It was said at the time that the editor
of the Mist owed his defeat for the nomi
nation as representative to his opposition
to Mr. Geer. Mr. Geer had many t
sere inemia in mis countv wno were
attracted by his ability as a campaigner
and who felt under obligations to him
for bis assistance in previous campaigns.
They did what they thought to be right
and we have no fault to find with them,
yet we believe it was better to go dow n
to defeat with James Withycombe tbau
' it would have been to have succeeded
with T. T. Geer.

OREGON
The report that President Roosevelt
appointed a negro to an important federal
Office in Ohio for the purpose of testing
the sincerity of Senator Foraker's pro
fession of regard for the African race is
probably nntrue. It would certainly be
a very poor reason fjrmakingan apioiut
ment, and entirely beneath the dignity
of the chief executive. If the negro is
worthy and well qualified he wiil prob
ably meet with no opposition in the
Senate and his appointment shoal! re- !
ceive no unfavorable criticism. To 1. '
li"ve that personal motives influenced
the P sidsnt is to assume that he is not
as large a 111.111 as the people credit him
with being. "The fact is that he is onlv
human is beginning to be appreciated !
by all except the isolators who decline I
admit tint he can by any possibility !
be wrong upon any subject, Uavin's !
