Fred Miller, who murdered his friend,
Fritz Dierks. between 11 and 12 o'clock
on the niirht of October 15, at Castle
Rock, wa found guilty of murder In the
first degree nt 8:10 to-night by the jury
trying the case nt Kalama. For a time
tho jury stood 11 to 1 for conviction,
but when certitin testimony wa ex
plained to the lone juror ho also balloted
for conviction. There wa practically
no defense, the accused simply saying
that he did not kill Dierks.
A U. S. inspector was here this week
to nuike arrangements for the carrying
of the mull between here and Houlton.

District Attorney of the Fifth Judicial
distiict the first of the year. He has
entered the law ofiice of Charles II .
Carey, in Portland, and while he could
keep hi public office by retaining a nom
inal residence in the discrict it is gen
erally understood or believed that he
will shortly tender hi resignation. Mr.
Allen has moved to Portland and will re
main at the Eaton Hotel for the winter.
In the spring he wilt take up his resi
dence on Portland Heighths where he
