between their mill and town. No ereat
damage has been done, except that over
a quarter of a mile of plank roads and

hindered the hauling of lumber. No
teams from Howard's, Law-ton's or the
Wilson-Case Mill could haul last Friday.
Also farmers living further oat had to
take roundabout roads to get to town.
The fires are by this time practically

As bo!d a robbery as was ever nernet
lated occurreJ at Rainier last Monda
at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, when
P. V. VanAucher, cashier of the State
Bank of Rainier, was held up by two ?
men, bound and united, and between !f
-',000 and fi',500 in gold coin taken from
the safe. The robbers walked in through ; B
tne onlockeJ front door, unmasked and ' k.
dressed like ordinary workingmen, they !T
attracted no attention from
the street, and when Mr. VanAucher
turned to wait on them he found him
self at their mercy.
The bandits had closed the door be
hind tfiein, and the shades on both doors j "tj
and windows had been drawn. Seeing I
that it would be useless to resist, Mr. ' S
Van Aucher dumbly complied with the! S
conventional command, "Hands up!"
backed by the presentation of a big six
shooter. The robbers then thrust a contrivanrH
of wood and cloth into Mr. Van Auchei's
mouth, dragged him into the rear office
of the b ink, and bound him securely to
the long table in the center of the
apartment. Tliey then returned to the
front room, locking the door of the rear
office behind them, and i.roceedid i,,
gather up their plunder. They did nut
take either the greenbacks or silver, and
when they departed they closed the
door, which has a spring lock, behind
them. After they had departed the
cashier tried desperately to loosen Ids
bonds, and after two hours of hard work
managed to get his feet loose, and drag
ging himself to the window iu the tear
room, lhru.it his head against the glass
and broke it out. The crush attracted
th'j attention of a man named Morris,
" passing, aril, climbing in
through the broken window. Morris i nt
