l)r. Charles (, ('spies, who died at his home in Columbia City, Ore

ol Columbia County, where he had resided nearly UU years. Born in
Tuscarawas County. Ohio, Slay 22, IHX'. he crossed the plains to Ore
gon with hia lather, Joseph Caplet, in 1844. in General tiilbains com
pany ol pioneer. Vpon arriving iu Oregon the lainily settled at
Silrui, where be attended the missionary school lor two years. In
1H47 he moved to Columbia County with his lather, who took up a
donation land claim cover ng the prejent tile of Columbia City. He
lived there on hit lather's Una uulil the memorable year ol '4tf, when
along with the first rush ol gold seekers, be went to the mines of
California, where he remained but a short time. Returning to Ore
gon in lH.'t, he took a course of study at the old Potest Urove Acade
my, and afterwards studied medicine at Portland, Oregon. In 1H55
be married Miss l.uiimU M. Mcliride, a daughter ol Or, James Mc
llndc, who waa one ol the foremost early pk.ncert of Oregon, and
whose tons and daughters hare taken a prominent part in up-building
the state. Alter his marriage be engaged in the practice of medicine

In the latter year he returned to Columbia County and practiced
medicine and engaged in fanning and stock raising on his donation
land claim, and resided continuously in Columbia County from 1871
to the time of his death.
Ir. Caples was one of the organizers am! founders of the Republican
partv in Columbia County, and, while he never held public office,
always took an active interest and prominent port iu local politic.
Instead ol striviug for his own advancement, his ambition and life
work was rather to tee that onlv worthy, pore, and honest men were
tail in local positions of public trust, and be alway vigorously op
posed ajid never compromised with men or principle be believed un
worthy or improper. A strong advocate of right liviug, clean politics,
and civic righteousness, and a firm believer in the old principle that a
tiublic ollice is a public trust anil should be administered honestly and
decently, he strongly opposed all grafting, lying, and cheating in pub
lic Hie 'and never supported a man lor office unleat he knew him to be
moral in public as well as in private life. He was ever working to
m ike local politics cleaner and public life belter. A Incnd once aptly
aid of htm. "He has been a political niitaionary in Columbia County
'"while Hr'ciiplea was not a member ol anv church, being unwilling
to circumacril his trliels within the orthodox creed and tenet of
any church organization, he was a Christian in the stnctent as well a
the w idest sense ol the term, and was a nnn believer in a future life.
Casting dogma aside, he lived a Christian life, doing the good that
lav nearest to him, and by example as well as precept, made the local
world around hitn better whrrever he could. He was a man ol great
hospitality and was always charitable and kind to others, especially
to the voung men and women who grew up around him. and who he
ever tried to guide into the better palht and walkt oi life. A firm
believer in God and immortality, be died as he had lived, a sincere
Christian geutleiucn, honored, loved and regretted by all who knew
h'llis wife Mrs. L. Caples, survives him. and he leaves two sons, Dr.
Dvron Mcliride Caples. of Waukesha, Wia. . and Frederick Caplet. ol
Columbia City, and three daugtera, Mita Willie Caples, of Columbia
City aud Mrs. K. M. Wharton auii;Mrs. Ceo. II. Slnnn, of Portland.
