FRIDAY. February 2, 1906.
TIHT SEASON FOR GOOD WORDS
Tills i tlie season of the year when all
tlie politioian eagerly express their love
for the dear people. Nothing is tno
good for the voters on the farms an J in
the citiw, and it is reasonable to believe
tho politicians R re sincere in their pro
fessions of friendship. They are tie
creatures of the people? anil like the
teacher in the pnblic school who, when
uknl whether the world was round or
Cat, answered that some folks held that
it was roond and others that it was flat ;
Lot he was willing to tech whatever the
directors prescribed. v The direct pri
mary law has to a great extent removed
the responsibility from the shoulders ot
the politicians and placed it upon the
people. It la a radical departnns from
tho old system, and its success or failure
depends rfpon the manner in which it is
txerUsed. The ideal government is one
that places the fullest possible measure
of power in the hands of tho governed.
But, having assumed this responsibility,
it is the duty of the voter to exoreiac it
to the fullest extent. Fear has been ex
pressed that many voters will stay away
from the direct primaries; tot those
who do so are certainly not acting the
part of good citiasus. Every Republican
owes it to his party to take an active part
in the primaries, and those who fail to
tio so when possible will be to blame if
the nominees elected do not prove vic
torious at the polls. The Mist, so far as
local candidates are concerned, intends
to give all an equal show in its columns,
only hoping that wisdom will be shown,
o that when the June campaign is on
it will find the republican parky pre
senting a solid front to the opposition.
WORK TO BE DOSE
TossiMy the greatest good that will bo
cceomplished by the direct priruarv law
5 the taking cf the election of United
jlates Senator out of the hands of the
Legislature. No one is better able to
appreciate this than the editor of the
Mist, who has been . a member cf one
legislature that elected a Senator and
. - nt in Salem at several other similar
t M,ionr. Aside from the fact that tlie
fK-upleget their choice in the matter,
the session is rid of the delay, trouble,
and scandal that always attends the
'election of a Senator by a Icgiclative as
sembly. The forty-day session 5s rrone too long
for good work, and the deliberations of
the legislative body (should not be inter
fered with by the fights of rival factions
tor the struggle of ambitious men. There
arc more imports nt matters. Tho ques
tions to be passed upon by the next leg
islature are vital to the prosperity of the
people of the Statn, and pioaiinent
Union" these is that ot equality before
the law. It is the great issue that the
3 'resident is pressing npou Congress, and
it has many subdivisions. (
Equal taxation ot railroads with other
kiropertv is one of the most important.
The assessors of Oregon should be sus
tained whenever they make a light for
this principle. If there is any good rea
son why farm property shontd be as
sessed at three-fourths of its face value
and railroad property at about one-fourth
we would like to have it pointed out.
The amount of taxes the railroad coin
panics have dodged would build crushed
rock roads through the length of Colum
bia County-, or, if put at interest, it
would pay the salaries of oar county of
licers for years to come.
These are matters fully as important
as the election of United States Senator.
