Solomon I). Sheely wat born in Coshoc
ton County, Ohio, January 20th, IO ;
died at hia home near Vernonia, Ore.,
January Illh, lSOl, aged 67 years, 11
mouths aud 14 days. He resided In
Ohio until about 18 yeara of age, when
he left home and went to Motucnce, 111.,
where he remained until he wat 21. At
that time he went to Minnesota, locating
in Guernsey County, where he resided
about ten years. I hiring bit residence In
Minnesota he was married to Miss Sarah
A. Van lllaricom. ln 1871, with a large
company of friends and relatives, includ
ing the Van lllaricom family, he aud hit
wife came west, locating at first in Hast
en! Washington. After a few years they
went to the Alsca Valley, in Southern
Oregon, but were there only a year,
coming Irom there to Washington Co.,
near Mouutaindale, where they lived
three years, when they moved to the N'e
halcin, taking up the homestead where
the family has since lived, being oue
among the old settlers of the valley.
Mr, Shceley had been a member ol the
V. lU Church about twenty years. Ills
tile was peaceable, quiet one. In the
hardships Incident to the pioneer life ol
the valley he was a good neighbor, las
house always being on-n to the paascrby
or new comer. He was a kind husband
ami a father respected and loved by his
children. His wife, two sons and five
daughters survive hint, vis;, J. P. and H.
H. Shcelry, Mra. Wm. Hood, Mr. C. B.
Armstrong, Mrs. Clyde Chamberlain,
Mrs. V. S. Mellingcr and Mrs. Claude
Chamberlain. The family with to ex
press their many thanks to the friends
and neighbors who so kindly assisted

William Wilson was born near Pan
nctsville, Franklin County, I'enn., May
Kith, 1MX Died at his home five miles
west of Vernonia, Ore., January 13th,
MUX, aged 02 years, 7 mouths and 20 days.
He lived, in his native state until youug
manhood, and the civil war coming on
he enlisted in the 1 Jo ill Keg. Penu. Vol.,
serving nine mouths. This was in the
earlier part of the war. After bring uius-
! tcred out he made Leavenworth, Kan.,
his headquarters, engaging in raising and
: selling hay to the government, following
this buiiiness until the close of the war.
In Auguitt, Ht,5, he was married at St.
JoM-ph, Mo., to Mist Klla S. Anderson,
formerly from Juuiutta County, Pean.,
the young couple biking up their home.
in Arkansas, where they resided for about
nine years, coming on to Oregon and set
tling in the Nchaletu years, ogo, being i
among the earliest to locate here, living
on htt homestead, where he died, ever
since. Mr. Wilson was an industrious
man. a hard worker, and had succeeded
in getting a large tract well cleared and
bud put u)kiii his quarter section good
improvements ill (act about the best in
this part ol the valley. In the early days
ol settlement heic Mr. Wilson not only
endure.! the hardship of pioneer life,
but was a kind friend and a willing help
er to it nelghlKir pioneer and csecially
to the new comer in need, lie was a
hale fcUow-wclI-niet, always looked upon
the bright side of everything, always had
a smile and a pleasant word lor everyone,
and contributed much by his jolly good
nature to help his neighbor bear the
harihihitn and endure the loneliness of a
backwoods life in the early days. This
optimistic nature he carried with him all
through life, even into his last sickness,
when naked with paiu as he ss he
could get off some pleasantry at the phy
sician, his pastor, family and friends.
Mr. Wilson had his faults as well as his
enemies, but he was a man ol very posi
tive views on religious and moral ques
tions, and these latter were to his credit
We believe he endeavored, aud did, live
an upright life in so fur as he knew the
right. As we have known him the past
seven ycurs it has seemed to us that he

we met him but for tt moment, we were
alwuys the better by the contact. He
will be missed by the entire community.
His wife and the following children sur
vive him: Frank L., Harry A., and Will
O.; Mrs. Ida M. Shaunuhnu, Mrs. Bertha
O. Shaniialwn, and Mrs. Dessle I. Hoi
brook. So sudden was his sickness and
so overwhelming, cspcciully when the re
lapse came, that none of his children
were home except Harry and the two
daughters Ida and Bertha, the latter not
being at his bedside wheu he died. His
life was swept away, ua it were, in
whirlwind. Mr. Wilson made a profes
sion ol faith in Christ lu 181 and joined
the 17. B. church, remaining a member
thereof until lxut three years ago, when
be joined the F.vnugelicul church. He
was active in all church and charitable
work and (lied in the full hope ol the life
eternal. He was a mcinlier ol Vernonia
Grange No. 1105 and its fumnciul secietary
at his death, and being a member who
nlwuya took part in all mutters coming
Wore the Grange, will be missed at its
future meetings. Rest, brother, in peace.
