I'OOTt OFFICIAL l'-lPEU.
Tho IJepauIi.ain tiartY in Oregon, anJ
specially in Columbia County, has an
opportunity daring the coming cam
paign, to gvt together and present a solid
H front to the combination of populism
and socialism that pnrtinlly vic
torious in the laat election. Tliere it but
one way to do this and that ia the pint n
and simple way of permitting the voters
who will be called spon to elect the
ticket to have the fuil aay in nominating
it. Not only must the direct primary
law be carried out to ttie letter, bat the
spirit of it mast prevail and no clique or
combination roast be formed to place
before the people a li niitej number of
candidate from whom they wiH be com
pelled to make their choice. The field it
a free ami open one, and any man who
Aspires to nomination for any office in
the gift of the people is entitled to have
iis merits and demerit tally discussed
and then passed cpon by the Repub
lican voters at the primary election. It
ii np to the voter of the tarty to select
their candidates, and when that is done
there should be no doubt of success at
the polls.
V are to elect in this county a rep
resentative, commissioner, clerk, and
sheriff. The democratic county judge
and the school superintendent who was
fleeted in opposition to the regular Re
publican nominee, holdover for two
fears, as do the Republican sheriff
and oc Republican commissioner.
With the exception of the sheriff, who
in all probability will be re-nominated
and re-elected, it i probable that there
will be sever?! candidates tor each office.
The contest between tbeni should be of
the most friendly nature, and each can
didate should make np hi mind to hon
prably abide by the decision of the Re
publican voters aa expressed at the pri
jnariee, and if defeated manfully do all
in bis power tor the election of the
entire ticket Our enemie in the
county are shrewd politicians, and they
hare demonstrated their ability to take
j he follest advantage of any misstep
)-idebyUie Republicans, and.as they
appeal to the false spirit of non-partuan-hip
and make the canvass cpon per
eoBalitits rather than upon principles,
they havp frecjuenijy been successful.
Whether ilieir success lias been of
beneSt to the people of Colombia County
may well be questioned. Have the dem
ocratic and populist officials that have
been elected here in past years been
more honest, economical or efficient than
the Republicans? We are willing to ad
mit that there hare been errors com
mitted, bat can any party show a clear
record, free from mistakes?
We do not mean to be understood as
attacking the present democratic and
anti-republican officials in this county ;
but an investigation will plainly show
that their election has not resulted in
any Rreat saving for this county, not
withstanding the great promises that
vrere made prior to the election.
A GOOD CHOICE.
The Mist hoped that Judge T. A. Me
Rride, of this district, would receive tie
appointment as district judge to succeed
the late Judge Eellinger; but, as we
could not have our first choice, it is a
pleasure to note that the selection has
fallen upon a man altogether worthy and
well qualified. Judge Wolverton, who
has received the appointment, U not
only an able lawyer, but we believe he
posses in an eminent degree the traits of
character necessary for the discharge of
his great duties. We believe he is just,
honorable, and merciful. Vj do not be
lieve any consideration other than that
pf right will ever influence him in ren
dering a decision or in passing sentence,
lie will render justice, tempered with
mercy.
Gov. Chamberlain has exclusive man
agement of the State penitentiary, end
it is the only State institution with which
any scandal has been connected during
the past two years. If He were a Kepul.
Hcan the papers of thst party would be
filled with the details; but anything
Georgo does seems to be alt rij;ht with
the faithful. The son of the snperin
tendent recently "foond" a diamond ring
belonging to one of the convicts, but
failed to report bis find until it was ac
cidentally discovered, and a watch be
longing to another convict was "lost"
from the safe, and the warden said noth
ing about it, his excuse being that .pub
licity would binder the chauu, of its re
turn. Queer doings in a "reformed" in
stitution. The Cowlits Advocate notes that the
famous DeMoas family is making its
thirty-fourth annual tour of Oregon and
Washington. That's what's the matter
with tho country j-foo much d moes.
President Roosevelt is no mugwump.
He wrnt to his bore in Nassau County,
New Yoik, to catt bis vote for tSe Re
ubliran nominees on the county ticket.
It is op to Mr. Ileney to prosecute Abe

OTI1LK t IIABTt-HS,
At a recent session of the Yernoni
ciiy coctnril the matter of petitioning
the Legislature to sr.nul that city's char
ter was considered and decided ia the
negative, and it was decided to comply
ilh the charter's provisions, elect a full
set of officers and give the town an effect
ive government. This was brought about
by the suggestion of the district attorney,
who found that be could not convict a
violator of the law because the matter
was within the jurisdiction of the City
of Yernonia, and the city could do noth
ing in the matter because it had no ef
fective organization. Tbe action of the
people of Yernonia is to be commended ;
but we hope it will not stop with organ
ization. The municipalities of thiscoun
ty have grossly failed in their duty, in
that they have not compelled obedience
to the laws. They take from the county
school fund all the money paid for saloon
licenses, and they compel the county to
stand the cost of all the case arising
from tbe existeuce of the liquor traffic.
If there is a drunken row, a cutting
scrape, or any other crime originating in
the use of liquor, the county is put to
the expense of prosecuting tbe case,
while the municipalities get the revenue
froui the liquor tractile, speed it upon
their streets, snd the taxpayer who live
onUide of the cities is called upon to foot
the bill, except, of course, the portion of
the taxation which comes from city prop
erty.
The Legislature has delegated to the
municipalities the duty of enforcing cer-
lain laws, and when they fail to do eoj
and put the burden upon the county
their charters shouiJ be revokeu, unless here.
they show a disposition, as Yernonia! K. E. Nickerson wer.t out to Portland
his done, to mend their ways. The i, another lasd cf hls &nc

should they be? Tbe original states of
