WHY WASHINGTON COUNTY
FAlLtD.
The Hillsboro I i.lepenilcnt appear to
ix nnaWeto imJerrtrud why Washington
ounty killed to receive the credit to
wbicta.it should have been entitled at the
hands of the committee that awarded the
.comity prUei at.the lc;U anl dvV Ex
position, ami for the beucfit of. our friend
Bath we will endeavor to explain it, at
,we understand it:
In the first place, the gentlemen in.
charge of Washington County's .interests
,ind.e.tUe mistake of UickiiHJ the mat
ter entirely from an agricultural stand
point, and if this had liecn the true .point
fA view Washington would .have been en
JitI.ed .to a ,iuch higher gating, for her
-products were pf the vury finest. But the
.committee on awards very rightly decided
,on the point system, giving credit for
numerals, forestry, fish, game, livestock,
.manufactures, and all the other resources
jl .tli ceuflty, nd in these varied classes
Washington was outpointed by much
smaller counties, including Columbia.1
Washington received the largest number
.of gold medals awarded any county in
he States but .tley were procured by
snaking seoarate entries of each bunch of
jgrain, and several gold medals were
warded different persons on precisely
,the sunt article. For instance: F.mil
,Cap, Mrs..Qcorgia Hughes, and Thomas
Talbot were.eac,h awarded a gold medal
,on Chili Club wheat. Such awards had
410 effect on the Jiny that passed upon the
respective merits of the county exhibits,
and were probably made for the purpose
if eucouragiag the corporation's pet jew
eler, as there is certain to be a rakeofi oo
.every medal manufactured.
.Columbia County did not make so
anany separate entries, but we endeavored
to have something on hand to score in
ach department. Points were given for
imtallation. and our booth was conceded j
,to be the peer of any in the agricultural
building. Then we had lish, minerals,
forestry, dairy, agriculture, and horticul
ture. Our agricultural exhibit did not
compare in quantity with Washington
.County's, but our entire showing, taking
.into consideration the development of the
,two counties, was considered worthy of
second place, while Washington was
placed in the fourth clau.
The jury of awards, to ileteruiac Hut
.distribution of the eaat paze offered by
Hie State Commission, was composed of
.one representative from five different
.-States. Each of these men had charge of
his own State's interests at the Exposi
tion, and presumably was one of the lead
ing citizens of bis State. It was an ideal
jury, and its findings are entitled to the
greatest respect. Washington failed sim
ply because her exhibit was made upon
,the one-idea plan, and was not broad
enough in its scope.
No pr-st spare HI ue given to any re
fntal of the Register's statement. The
ia t it, hoaever, tliut Mr. Mitchell far

On sober second tiiought the Japanese
Jiave concluded that the treaty with
jRussia is about the right thing, ami se

Jjisn it came to.
There seems to 1m something in the
,nattire of a popular r gret tltat Tat
f'rowe was not sared to the public long
enough to take a pull at some of the big
nsurancu swindlers.

5AV.E THE SMUTCH.
Rov. Kemp announced Inst Snndnr
that, unlets some move wot inaugurated
to prevent it, the Methodist Church Ex
tension -Society would shortly foreclose
its lien npon the rhorcli bniltling at this
place, and that it would be torn down
and tuch parts of it as were available
would be used in the construction of a
church at Rainier. The debt upon the
church amounts to one thousand dollars,
and the Extension Society offers to ac
eept five hundred dollar and tnrn the
building over to the church free of all
incumbrances. Just at this time St.
Helens it not a good field for so many
churches, and if we believed the preeent
local stagnation would continue we
would think it best to allow the church
to be torn down. But we believe that in
two years from now the population of
thit place will be more than doubled,
and that we will need all the present
church facilities. The Methodist de
nomination, with the assistance of people
of oilier belief', and tome of no belief,
built the old church on the hill, and for
many years it wot the only place of wor
ship in thit city. Ministers of all de
nominations held services there, and
they did not seem to be any the worse
for their contact with each other; but
the time came, at it appears to in all
CMumunities, when the different i cU
thought it necetry for each to have a
separate place of worship, and it appears
fiot in order to accomplish this the
Methodists have asaumed a burden
greater than they can bear.
Would it not be a good tiling, from
everr standpoint, for our citixens to help
them bear thit burden? On the ere of
a revival of our business interests, we do
not want it said that it was necessary for
aliy chun-h to be torn down and moved
away from SL Helens whet) the mm of
(500 will ave it.
How niuch can you afford to give to
keep a handsome church edifice from de
struction? Let the editor know, and we
will tee what can be dune about it. Sev
eral contributions are assured, but more
are needed.
