One year ago ywhf rday occurvd the
, fl re that wiped out the business poitionof
jM. Helens, caused loss of many thous
ands of dollars, and spread a general
gloom throughout the community. Tlio
progress thnt litis been made iu the past
'year, while not nil that was hoped, id
substantial and it seems to bo assured
ihat in the year to come much greater
advance will be made. From what the
Mist can learn tho prospects for the
.future of 8t. Helens were never brighter.
It seems to bo assured that a new court
home, will be beun during the coming
'year. The county connnUsioiiers have
'pledged themselves to this, and they
are men of their word. Besides, it is
the sentiment of tl.e county that the law
should be complied with as toou as
practicable, and thereby this vexatious
question be forever put at rest.
It is also practically assured that a
new and up-to-date, mill will be erected
'with a cutting capacity of from 7o,0M to
100,000 feet of lumber per day, and that
a spur w ill be constructed to connect
St. Helens with the Northern Tacitic
Uailroad. .St. Helens now has a good
school building, good streets and itsown
water system, and with the improve
ments above mentioned it will begin an
era of prosperity such as the old tow n
has never known.

Refjring to Seattle week at the
the Portland Oregonian says
"It is something to have attracted lo
Tortland the presence of so many people
.from Puget Sound as have rome since
June 1, and to have heard from one and

creates and maintains it is all right."
To the people of the different counties

an important factor in drawing people
to the Fair. Portland is the greatest
beneficiary. It is reaping a baivt

Tmty-ode divorces were granted by
judge Cutland Friday. Few questions
wero a.litd, but neatness, dispatch and
good nature marked the entire proceed
ings. F.rty-two ptrsonj seem to have
agreed that' marriage is a dismal failure,
and the entire forty-two are presumably
happier for the kindly intercession of the
court. Indeed, the court teems tJ have
had no alternative. The defendant made
no protest. There was obviously nothing
to do but accept the ex parte statements
of the twenty one complainants.
Eighteen of the twenty-one complain
ants were women. It is always so.
Three-fourths or more of all divorces arc
given to women. lecajse they are less
patient and more abused than men? Or
because the men are more tolerant and
less inclined to rush before tlie public
with their grieviances? We answer at
once that women are both n.cr.- patient
ana more irtqicntiy atmsed thai n.en,
b cauie all women and mauy men say so.

But few people who stand Hgapclnnwo
and admiration as they view the solid
splendor of the Foaestry building, at thu
Lewis ami Clark Exposition know that
the greater number of the immense" logs
of whkh the buiidirg is constructed
come from Columbia Count;. And
the county's booth iu the Agricultural
building is yet another display of
timber. Columbia's wealth lies iu'her
tree. There ate more than 10,000,1100,-
000 feet of what ia termed the Jiutst
lauding timber in the world, within
the bouudry liuesof tho county. Wheie
there are now waving lields of goldeu
grain, 11) years ago was trncklcss toiest,
Uh what was then termed an inex

woodmans ax and the lumberjack and
the logging railroads have all done their
share toward converting wood into
uiouey.
Iu the county's loth at the Expo
sition are numerous bundles of cedar
shingles aud poles silent testimonials I
of the way Columbia County cititeus
gather in the dollars. One of tho most
interesting exhibits is a fir "knee" a
tree which grew without foliage or limbs
and which is so old that it appears as if
teared by forest flames. A perfect cedar
board -Xt feet long and 62 inches wide is
another cpeciiuun of Columbia County
timber ou display. The frout and ceil
ing of the booth are made of Columbia
County timber.

probable that an attempt will be made,
in return for her complaisance in saiving

would look better for Portland to give
some credit to the oqtside State.
When a country is new there is in
evitable waste. Much of it cannot be
voided because of a lack of facilities for
using up various offal. For instance,
we of the North west are probably more
familiar with the waste of wood than
.anything else. We haye seen portions
which would be carefully utilized iu the
J-:sst, thrown" away. As wood grows
scarcer it is used more carefully, and by
products are manufait ired from it, un
til there is no part of' tho tree unused.
In Michigan a distilling plant has been
established which uses PQ cords of tim
ber a day. The wood used consists in
crooked logs, tree tops and offal of ail
kindj from lumbering campi. From
,0116 cord are manufactured wood alcohol,
ten gallons of it, 200 pouu Js of acetate of
liuw and fifty bushels of charcoal. Very
little is lost. The alcohol brings CO cents
a gallon, the acetate of lime is worth
two cents a pound and the charcoal sells
or 10 cents a bushel. It is estimated
.that the value of the wood used per cord
