In a recent address Prof. n. F. Oa-
born gave aome additional facta about
ancient American borsea. It appears
that In North America there were al
ways from four to six entirely differ
ent varietlea of the horse family living
tug contemporaneously. Home were
slow-moving and relatively broad-footed
horaea, living In the foreats; others
were very swift, having narrow feet
more resembling those of the deer, and
lived on the plains. Moreover, there
were American horses larger than the
huge Percherons of to-day, and other
smaller than the most diminutive Shet
land. Strangely enough, tbe greatest
beauty and variety In tbe development
of tbe horse family were exhibited here
Just before tho total extinction of
horses on the American continent, a
catastrophe wbicb still offers an un
solved problem for Investigation.

would be more likely to escape tbe

Bald Meads and Disease.
There are advantages accruing even
from bald heads. It Is pointed out by
writer In a medical Journal that buld-
headed men never suffer from con

ness Is au assurance that the dreaded
spurge will pus over bliu whose
tbntcb grows thin.
At first glance It would seem absurd
to argue that a man's buir Is Indira-
ve of his Immunity from disease, but
tbe writer who advances this novel
theory declares that In the five years
urlng whlcb he seriously added a rec
ord of his patients' hair or lack of It

single Instance of "bald" being entered
upon the card of a consumptive.
He had under treatment more tlmn
700 cases and he makes the further
statement that In a census of mure
thnn 5,000 tuberculosis cases he fa I lei
to discover a single sufferer who was
bald.
He makes no effort to explain bis
theory upon medical grounds, but sim
