FRAUDS.
President (ioode, of the Exposition,
jias iesned statement in which ho de
fends the Waller Kee4 Optical Com
pany'! transactions and therrhy, to a
.certain extent, becomes a party to the
frauds that they have perpt-tratvd and
re daily endeavoring to perpetrate upon
visitors to th t I-ewia and Clark Kxpo
sition'Mr. Goodeinsiststhnt thearticles
sold by the Optical Company are worth
tle money paid for them, and is quoted
as. sayfng "I have not found a single
jnstnnre where the Optica! Company has
failed toive full value received, as per
4he printed price list." There are none
so blind At those who will not see, and
Mr. Uoode is making money by permit
ting visitor to the fair to he swindled,
and by the nse of his position he is
.assisting in the swindle.
The Walter Keed Optical Company is
a set of frauds and the methods adopted
ty them tliould land them in the
penitentiary.
it is easy to make the matter so plain
that no one can mistake the situation.
Take the case of Mr. Geo. Merrill,
.who is one of the honored pioneers of
.Oregon. Mr. Merrill wis induced to
.enter one. of their booths, and was
uueu lor a pair ot glasses, lie was
then informed that the price of the
glasses would be $32, probably the '"list
price" Mr. Goode refers to. Then the
sker began redlining the price of his
jgoods to S'j;t the purse of bis customer,
gradually coming down until Mr. Merrill
became the purchaser of a set of magni
fiers at the seemicgly low price of (S.
If the glasses cojIJ be sold for ti was it
not a cjer frand to attempt to get $32
lor them? Of course they were not
1 'rth even the $8 finally charged.
But the editor of the Mist has personal
knowledge that the spectjcle operators
are frauds. In company with his son
he was in&ced to enter one of their
booths, and tbeexpert fakir tesetd the
young man's eyes, finally announcing
that unless be was presently fitted with
ft pair of the $32 glasses, in a very few
years be would be totally blind, the
statement being made that he was
afflicted with what is known as double
eight. As Mr. Reed's name bad been
well known to the editor for years he
felt inclined lo beleive the etueiuents;
but finally left the booth without
purchasing, the greatest reason beingj
because he did not hare the price. Last
week, while in 1'ortiaLd, in company
with the sou referred to, we yisited Dr.
C. E. Brown, ooevf the oldest and best
known occnlista iu the State. Without
any statement being made as to the
visit to the fair fakir, another exam-

neglected my classes and at times have
turned them over to the foreman of the
farm, which is unqualifiedly false. It is
true I have been away a good deal at
tending farmers' institutes and other agri-
cultnral conventions, but can assure Mr.
Keady that these meetings have been
kept upon a higher plane than he is
capable of appreciating and have not
been subservient to the selfish ambitions
of any individual. These instituti s are
usually held at a season when I have no
class work. In case I am called away
when I have classes the work is pre

the farm, assumes charge.
In fact I challenge any person to show
