COM LIE.
Mr. W. 1 Keady, extretii .Jy practical
lilician and manipulator of conveii
.lions, incidentally recent of the Cor

,tlie resignation ol Dr. James Withy
.coiubc, director of that institution,
because lr. Witliycouiu has announced
himself as a candidate for the office ol
'Governor. Keady, at the recent meet
inj of the regents, introduced a resold
tion demanding Dr. Withycombe's reeijt
nstion, and this resolution .was support
ed by two Democrats and one Ilepubli
,can, Uie Republicau being a federal
office holder named Daly. It wa
opposed by Regent! Ackerman, Dunbar,
Alwell, Apperson, Irvine, Ystes and
Leady. Jio wonder inch Republicans as
Keady oppose Dr. Withyconibe. Mr.
Keady has stated that he prefers to see
Chaniherlain elected raUier Ilia a Dr.
Raines Wilhycombo. Keady .Claris that
Witnycouibe is .working Jo secure Ute
nomination for oeraor, and in so
doing is neglecting .his official dnlies;
.bat it will require more than Mr.
Ready's word to make those acquainted
with Dr. N'Hhycoinbe beleive this. As
director of tbe Agricaltaral College be
has for many years visited gatherings ol
farmers and lectured to yicm upou sub
jects connected wift sgricnlture, and
"this it was his duty to do. The.fa.riuers
,of Oregon never bad a better or more
'intelligent friend than Dr, James
Witlijcombe. Now who are Keady and
Daly, the only Republicans who asked
,Jor WUnyconib's resignation? Keady
is a professional political worker and
.legislative lobbyist, and it was rumored
that he was jiberajly ,Pi4 for bis work
in connection witi the State printers
womiualion in tbe last Republican con
tention. It is certain that his nephew,
notwithstanding he was ctterly incom
petent, secured a position in the state
Printing Office, and that his brother had
.charge of the printing office of the State
Agricultural College, of wbkb Kady is
f n-gent. Daly is United States Sut-
.or General, and secured his job by
Awing for Senator fpltgn. All ,these
men are opposed to the direct prim-rr
system. Tbey believe the parties
.should be ruled by uose the tore th y

himself a year in advance and thus
gives the public ample opportunity to
discuss his merits and demerits Their
attack upon Dr. Withycotntw will not

Five hundred and forty badges had

distributed arid some of our people were
obliged to go withont. Of course some
of these badges were given sway to

from eTery sectivn of the coonty.
