THE MISTS' COLUMBIAN EDITION. FRIDAY, MAY 8, IMS. COUXTY OFFICIAL FAJfER. Having the Largest I'imilnfi.m of any paper in Columbia County ,THK LIQUOR TRAFFIC LAW. A.: THE The saloon keepers of Columbia County appear to be doing their beet to create public feeling against t!,o liquor traffic, and unless they ilmno their 'course aiiif con line t he: r actions within the limit!) of the law the result will be that prohibition "ill carry in this comity at the next election. The viola 'tion of law by saloons nt St. Helen, lloulton nrdJUinicr is open aud notor ious." Saloons are kept open on Sunday, and at lloulton aud Rainier women and even young girls are allowed to frequent saloons and from the saloon they go to the brothel. ThU is a condition of af fairs that calls for the condemnation of every right minded person, whether or 'not they believe in absolute prohibition, and if it is necessary to remedy this con- "dition, saloons in this county will be- 'coine s thing of the past. ' Tbe liquor traffic is in Us nature dan gerous, and far this reason the lav ha placed about it man restrictions that lo not apply to any other business. It 'must pay a higher license than other callings, and the saloon keeper must give bonds for a strict observance of the Jaw. Oenerally speaking, these bonds are worthless, as the officers of the law "ail to do their duty,- even when they know of their own knowledge that the law is being violated, hither they are in sympathy with the law breakers or they fear tlieir political power. Which ever it may be the result is the same, and the disreputable keeper of a dive goes nnwhipt of justice, while the county and the state maintain the courts, peniWr.tiar:ei and caylums. "rendered necessary to a great extent by the liqnor traffic. Saloons are permitted to exist, not be cause oi any moral goorl that accrues 'the community, but because it is thought the license sytem is preferable to prohibition, the argument being that the danger of losing his license will in duce the soloou keeper to stay within 'the limits of the law. If this aiguinent is a fallacy if the saloon keeper will not Obey Die Uw and the officers win not j compel him to do so, then the time has come for the voters of this county to r- 'alize that the saloons of this coun'y as tbey are now being conducted are an unmitigated evil, producing nqthing of benefit to the country, and taking ironi Hie taxpayers in court costs far more than they return in license fees. TJtis paper proposes Xo publish during the efirly days of uic L,evjs ana uianc exposition an issue oi s,ooo copies, devoted to a coaiprchcusive sliowinor of the resources of Columbiji 0punty, from north to south and from cast tg west. No section of the county will be neglected and no re source will be overlooked. It will be" the most important atixnipt eve- made to make this'couiity luiovu to those who arc seeking opportunities lor investment ot capital, cither in farm lands or productive industries ofanv description. The literary work a ill be done by thoroughly competent persons m each locality, thus insuring absolute fairncps to the cutler- ent sections ot tue county. 1 he paper will be quite protusely illustrated with newspaper halftones, including natural scenery, water powers, logging camps, school hquses, churches, etc. The entire edition should be placed wheren will do the most good, and in crder to accomplish this all who are interested ni the development oi Columbia County should leud a helping hand. It you want neighbors to help bund up j'pur community or capital to aid m the building up of dormant Industries, this is your chance to do good work to that end. These papers will be mailed to any address far 5c per copy Scud in the names, accompanied by the money. IT IS A MATTER OF HEALTH Whatcom connty will distribute .jo.OOO pamphlets :U the Portland exposition aud will spend 20,OOOin efforts there to display its resources and attractions to settlers; Snohomish county will dis tribute 50,000 booklets and invest ilo.OOO in the same enterprise. Whatcom coun ty had representation r.t the St. Louis exposition that cost about 8,000. and considered it such a profitable expendi ture that the amount will ba more than doubled for this summer's campaign; 'Snohomish county is going in on t"e basis; and it is a notable fact that the counties that have been the heaviest in vestors in exposition enterprises as a means of promoting growth are the heaviest investors in the Portland pro ject. If tbey did not have evidence that it pays they wouldn't continue to spend thousands of dollars in such exhibits. Olympia Recorder. OCEAN KAFri.N(". .The girs cotneg from San Francisco SHOUT BITS. There bas been so many coal and gas discoveries in this part of the country lately that lit tle importance may be attached to the announcement of this latest find, but it is one of the utmost importance, if the statements of parties who have seen the discovery can be accepted. It was found by Captain M. F. Haien, of Warren, who had previously observed sand pulsations resulting from natural gas deposits. He had never heretofore, however, satisfied his curiosity by digging into the sand mounds which heaved op hat a bij company is to be formed for and down on the beach, although he says the purposed engaging in the business be then supposed the pulsations were due of towing logs jrom the Columbia river to the action of natural gas. and other Washington and Oregon points to California on a large scale. Capt, Robertson, who has beeu cuccess 'fully engaged in towing logs from Stella, this couiity, to California' points for some time, is interested in the new company. ' ' It bas been decided to baild sawmills at San Diego and Kan Pedro, instead of on the Ban f r.ipcisco ay s.hore, with "tha idea in view, Capt. Robertson has, - options on sites at the two mentioned through, agents, Usia quietly getting southern ports. The log-rafting company wiU spend unoui i,(AAi,uuy on its plants ana ex- roects to cut about 30.000,000 feet of logs each year. As these rafts usually con 'eist of between 8,000,000 aud 10,000,000 feet logs, it is estimated that the com pany will eend dowu from the Columbia S-iver and Puget Sound Pr,s each year three or four rafts, unleai tboir mills at San Pedro and Kan Diego are increased In capacity or the company decides to Jj'iiM ailiiiticr.al This will be the' biggest rafting pro ject ever undertaken in thc'woild. He accuse Judge Uattan of being a par ty to a steal ; but thon, nob xly cares for Jr. MiloheU'g opinion. One morning recently, as Hazen was walking along the beach at extreme low tide, his attention was again attracted by the pulsations. Out of curiosity he scraped away the top of one of the small mounds, and was somewhat surprised to find that gas escaped from the hole in the sand. To convince himself, he touched a match to the gas, and a flame of blue rose to a height of 18 inches or more. Captain Hazen noticed several other pulsing mounds near by, and he scraped away the tops of four or five and lighted th: escaping gas. In a few minutes he had several fires on the beach. At the point where the find was made the water was but six or eight feet away. The tide was at its lowest stage. Search of the sand above low water mark failed to reveal the presence of gas indications, &nd the people who saw the mounds are convinced that the escape boles exist on ly below high water mark. The flame from the gas is blue, indicat ing, it is said a fine quality of gas. It is believed at Chinook that gas deposits there are extensive and that gas supply ior this part of the country can easily be secured.
