The necessity of Identification la one
of tho concessions the honest portion of
tbe community has to make to a world
In which fraud and deceit are not un
known. Not every one holds the same
confidence in human nnture as the toll
keeper who, when asked what the
bridge fees were, replied, "Two cents,
sir, and half-price for ministers." "Hut
how do you know a man Is a minister
Just because be says sol" "Oh, sir,
ministers never lie." The paying teller
of a certain bank did not see matters
In such a Hibernian light; he required
a definite Identification, and the Chi
cago News tells how he got It.
"You will have to be Identified be
fore I can pay you the money on this
check." said the teller.
"Ain't It good?" asked the man.
"Oh. the check's all right, but I don't
know you. You must get some one
who knows you to come here and tell
me you are the one to whom tbe check
Is made out."
The man left the bank with a puuled
expression on his face. Half an hour
later he returned.
"The man that gave me that check."
he said, "can't come, but he sent this,
and says for you to give me the
money."
He held up a large sheet of paper.
On It was the pencil outline of a man's
band. The chart showed a first finger
cut off below the knuckle and the sec
ond finger missing. Below It was writ
ten. "This is tbe best I can do. I
can't come over aud the man can"'

The man has an anchor tattooed on his
right arm and powder marks on the
lobe of bis left ear. II smells of
whisky, and can lick any man In your
bank with one hand tied behind him."
That the note was written by the sign
er of the check was evident from tbe
handwriting.
"Hold up your hand," said the teller.
The man held his band over tbe trac
ing on tbe paper, and it fitted per
fectly. "Snow me the anchor."
Tbe blue-tinted emblem of hope ap
peared. The powder marks were in
evidence, and the air was burdened
with the odor of whisky.
"Here's your money." said the teller.
"You needn't try to lick anybody.
You're sufficiently Identified."

Frank R. Stockton's "Reformed
I'irate" had a harmless and absorbing
occupation. To keep himself out of
n.ischief. he had taken to knitting
tidies. M. A. I. says that among the
classes held at the East End of Lou
don for tbe instruction of the poor
was one devoted to ambulance work.
One day a woman came to say that
her husband had been drinking Immod
erately, and to beg that something
might be done for him. A clergyman
sought him out, persuaded him to be
come a member of the club, and put
him into the ambulance class.
In a short time the man became
earnest in the work, and was a regu
lar attendant
"How Is your man doing now?"
asked the clergyman, tbe next time
be met the wife.
"He never goes to the 'pub.' sir."
said she. proudly. "He spends bis
evenings at borne, bandaging the cat."
Lizards that Walk on Two Feet.
Lizards of several sorts can walk
and run easily on tbelr bind legs. The
Australian water lizard, which Is three
or four feet in length, keeps quite erect
when traversing long distances on
land. It Is found in the neighborhood
of river banks and passes much of Its
time in shallow water.
Tbe frilled lizard of Queensland also
travels ou Its bind legs on level
ground, keeping tbe fri.ll folded while
running. When attacked it expands
this fold of skin, which stands out like
a rulT at right angles round tbe neck,
giving it a formidable aspect, so that
dors Hint attack and kill larger liz
ards will often retreat before a frilled
lizard at bay.
There is also a tree lizard In Aus
tralia that moves in a similar way.
All these species walk on all fours
when merely moving about or going
short distances.

Common clear glass, left exposed In
certain desert regions ot the earth,
soon changes greatly In appearance
and acquires color, sometimes rose
purple and sometimes amethyst. This
change has been attributed by some
observers to alkaline soils, nut others
maintain that such changes occur
where there Is no alkali, and that It
must be due to the great activity of
the actinic rays of the sun where the
atmosphere Is very clear.

chestnut Is tbe most digestible nut,
and can not only take the place of the
potato, as In France, where chestnuts,
boiled and mashed like potatoes, make

than tbe potato, and Is more digestible
than tbe latter. Like the potato, also,
Its nutritive and digestive qualities
