Mr. R. McDonald, recently manager of
Assessor Law returned from hi official
trip to tbe Lower Nehalem country mm
Sunday, having completed use aasesa
ment of Auburn precinct, wmie air.
White was assessing the upper precinct.
This completes the assessment of Colum-
bia County with the exception ol a por
lion of the nonresidents" property. Mr.
Laws had not been in tbe Nenaiem
country for a year, and waa very mucn
surprised at the improvement anown.
A great deal of hard worn nas cew
done, and the roads are now in fair con
dition. The cream industry ha grown
into importance and very many of the
termer have separator. The cream is
taken to Clatskanie, aad thence shipped
to Portland. The good road movement
means prosperity to the Nehalem country
and to the whole county.
There are no shoe made that are better
than the Stilsoa line, carried by Perry ft
Graham.
A steam laundry would pay at St.
Helens. It is the best point in uwgoo
for such aa institution. All the country
north of here would patronise it, and it
would get a great deal of easiness , from
Portland. Cheap wood, tree water, ana
low reat would de helping factor.

which this pure, noble boy wa neia oj-
all who knew him. Friends were m
attendance from all over the county,
more than filling the church, and alt
remed to be mourners. The many
beautiful floral tribute, many of whicn
were from his schoolmates, seemed to
attest the beauty and purity of his char
acter.
The service were conducted by Rev
erend Jones, the pastor, and Straub, of
Portland, who truly said that, though
only s boy in years, whose time had been
but a brief span, Raymond' life was
worthy of emulation by every young
parson, his character, noble purposes,
and high ideals are beautiful sermons to
all who knew him. Those whom we love
arc never lost, and the influence ol a
good life never die. Those whom we
see no more in their accustomed places
have been summoned home to become in
hieher. roller, larger sense than was
possible amid these earthly surrounding,
the minister of the mysteries of Divine
Providence at affecting our live.
Bavmnnil waa indeed trood boy. He
wa a kind playmate, an interesting com
nan ion. an ideal pupil, a manly brother.
a Wring and obedient son. His influence
at borne, at school, among hi associate,
anywhere, wa always elevating and re-
finine. He rve much promise
noble, useful life; but the tender plant
was cut down, just as tbe beautiful flow
er was bnddine. ere fruitage time had
come. Such a boy will be missed, not
only in the home ia which he ha been
iu light and joy, but m toe enure community.
't ..vm have their time to fall.
And flower to wither at the north wind'
breath.
And stars to set: but all.
Thou hast all seasons for thine own
