for the strawberry fields of Hood River.
The residence of Edward Doaue, of
Kcuben, was destroyed by fire last Tues
day afternoon. Most of the household
goods were saved. The Iom was in the
neighborhood of fyx).
Work is progressing upon the improve
ment of the St. Helens water system, and
soon St. Helens and Houlton will have
a greatly increased water supply, wi n
sufficient force to afford adequate rotec
tion in case of fire within city limits.

a series of revival meetings at the Yank
ton church on Friday, May 27. All are

1 City, on Friday last, at the age of
seventy-eight years, was quite well
known throughout Columbia County,
ami in 1900 was the Democratic nomi-
net for County Judge. He was born
in New York State, and came to Ore
gon in 1882, making his home tor the
greater part of the time since then
in Clackamas County. He was a
man of great ability, but, like many
others, did not look closely enough
after his own interests. His nature
was open and frank, and many of his
acquaintances will remember him
with pfcasure, and will sympathize

and Rainier teams on Sunday last re
sulted in a victory for the home team
by a score of 19 to 13. The game
was not errorless, but, nevertheless,
was well played for amateurs, and

cellent, and Ed Laws, also, deserves
credit for hard hitting. Among the

visitor to the county seat last Sun-
day, the guest of Dr. and Mrs. H. R.
Cliff.
Mrs. George Hall has mystenousiy
disappeared, with her baby, and her
husband has been unable to obtain in
formation as to her whereabout. It
has been charged, in the Evening Tel
egram, that Hall abused hi wife, go
ing so far a to strike her, anrt that
this abuse was the cause of her de
parture. Mr. Hall denies this, and
claim that he has treated his wile a
a husband should, and that her con
duct in leaving him was influenced
by his mother-in-law, Mr. McCar
tnack, who furnished the statement,
to the Telegram.

Another distressing accident occurred
Inst Friday night. The two boom men of
the steamer F. B. Jolies were drowned.
From what could be learned one of the
boom lights wus displaced and the boom
men were sent out to replace the light.
After doing this they returned to the
boat. One of the men wna handing the
boat's painter to the night watchman,
and in some way went overboard. The
other matt was sitting in the stern of the
boat and sprang to the assistance of his
companion. The force of his leap carried
him also overboard and he was drowned.
The Jones Towing Company, at the sug
gestion of Dr. Cliff, made an attempt to
retover the bodies, but were unsuccess
ful. The names of the two men are un
known. Dr. H. R. Cliff, of St. Helens, was in
town Saturlay last, attending to the du
ties of his office as coroner.
The wedding bells will again ring in

A. C. Panton to compromise mort
gage tax claims of county for the
years 1889, 1890, 1891, 1992, ordered
that upon the payment of $63.42 to the
Sheriff by said A. C. Panton, the said
Sheriff in authorized and directed to
enter satisfaction in full of said de
linquent mortgage taxes.
In the matter of opening of bids for
the construction of bridge across
Beaver Slough, bid of Isaac Ollila.

Sheriff thereon; same was continued

Ia the matter of correcting the list
of judges and clerks of election, in
this matter the following changes
were now made: Beaver Falls pre
cinct, S. R. Norgren appointed in place
of Ira Parcher, judge; Rainier pre
cinct, C. G. Thayer, chairman of fiist
board in place of J. F. Timoney; C.
L. Clark, judge of first board, in place
of C. C. Prichard; Marchland pie
cinct, J. E. Colvin, first clerk, in place
of G. W. Welch;" Nehalem precinct.
J. H. Wilson, chairman, in place of
Casper Libel; Frank Malmoerg, first
clerk, in place of J. M. Hill.
In the matter of checking up the
paid warrants and books of the Treas
urer and County Clerk; on this day
the court checked up the warrants
paid by the County Treasurer since
last term of court, also the books of
the Treasurer and County Clerk.
In the matter of changing the poll
ing place in Warren precinct, it being
shown the court that a change in the
polling place of said precinct will be
to the benefit of all parties concerned,
it is therefore ordered by the court
that the polling place of said Warren
precinct be and the same is hereby
changed to Bacon's Hall.
In the matter of the petition of C
H. Boisvert, for rebate of poll tax il
legally paid, petition granted, and or
dered that the Clerk draw a warrant
upon the general fund in favor of said
C H. Boisvert, in the sum of $1.00,
in settlement of the matter.
In the matter of the application of
E. O. Mott to remit part or tax for
the year 1903, petition denied.
