Sunday afternoon, at about 5 o'clock,
the alarm was turned In that Mrs. Meek,

chimney burning out, and no damage was
done. But after the citi tens and citiienesa.
es repaired to their homes a second alarm
was turned in from telephone 6742, that
the roof had caught fire from a spark, and
thrn the fun commenced. Of course pol
itics had nothing to do with it, but the
way those politicians got to that fire waa
a caution. E. K. Quick was the first on
the roof and Sheriff Hattan was a good
second. The worthy sheriff had his hat,
coat and vest off, and as he stood with one
stockinged foot on each side of the ridge
pole, in full view of the assembled multi
tude, he looked a model of heroism and
self sacrifice, and the way he put out that
spark with a half bucket of water and
poured the other half down the chimney
won the admiration of the spectators. In
the street in front of the house, with
noizle that looked as big as a telegraph
pole in his hand, stood Attorney Day.

If, however, the fire had occurred in the

sorrow over the loss of the widow's home,

RAINIER KITES
On Sunday last a baseball team
composed of local fans, together with
a large crowd of rooters, went to
Kelso to play the Kelso Catlin team-
! and met defeat. The score was 4 to
3. The first inning resulted in a shut-
out for both teams. Kelso scored
once in the second, and this was their
last until in the last half of the eighth,
when two men scored by a wild throw
from third to first by Good.
The best playing by far was done
by the pitcher, Caswell, and Catcher
Thurston. But through lack of sup
port the game went to Kelso.
Considering that the Rainier tram
had not been together before, and that
all the men. except three, were new .
players, the game was a very good'.,
. , . ' "

B rough made third twice through a

were made by Captain . W. Stacy,

Hon. George C. Brownell opened
the campaign for the Republicans of
Columbia County at Spence's Hall
in Houlton, Tuesday evening, in the
presence of an audience that packed
the hall to the doors. He was fre
quently interrupted by enthusiastic
applause, and his references' to Roose
velt were cheered to the echo.
He reviewed the early history of
the party from its birth to 18l, point
ing out its glorious achievements and
claiming that it has kept every prom
ise it has made. In 1896, when Mc
Kinley was elected, it made the battle
for the gold standard. We adopted
the gold standard, and no country has
ever prospered as we have since wn,
the Democratic party under Cleve
land had control for four years and
when McKinley was inaugurated the
first thing the Republican Admimstra
lion had to do wss to provide money
to pay an indebtedness that had been
created of over $347,000,000. Four
times during the Cleveland Admints
tration it bad to so to the money mar
kets of the world and borrow money,
When the Republican party turned
the government over into the hands
of the Democrats on March 4, 1893,
the public debt, less cash in the treas
ury, was $438,969,475. When the
Democrats went out of office after
four years of peace, the public debt
was 1986.656.086.
Commenting upon the effect of Re'
publican policies upon our foreign
trade, the speaker said since 1897 we
j na
ve sold to foreign nations $3,000,
000,000 worth of goods more than we
bought of those countries. Only
tew days ago a ship left New York
City with 10,000 tons of American
manufactured goods on board. A few
months ago another ship left New
York with 8000 tons of American-
made machinery, reapers, harvesters,
etc., all made in this country and sold
to Russia. In 1S70 the value of the
manufactured products of the United
States was $4.2.12,325,442. In 1900
they were $i:i,0.19.271,566. Farming
interests, the speaker claimed, had
advanced in the same proportion
"T!?e ,ruth "! 'd lh P'.
we have captured the markets of the
world for all our products, both acri
cultural and manufactured, and in do
mestic products we stand to-day as
the first exporting nation on the face
of the earth. This has been accom
pushed under the operation ot a pro
tective tariff without sacrificing any
of our markets, without lowering our
nigh scale ol wages and without sub
milting our own people to the compe
tition of the pauper labor of other
countries.
"Foreign markets for surplus pro
duction is all very well, but it is this
home market of ours which has been
built up and maintained through our
protective tariffs, and particularly
through the operation of the law now
on our statute books, which is not
only the pride of every American cit
iren, but the envy of every foreign
producer."
Mr. Brownell referred to Roosevelt
as the only President who ever had
the character and the manhood to
stand Wall street up and compel it to
do justice to the working man, and
said he is the highest ideal of states
man there is to-day in the civilized
world.
Hon. Harrison Allen was to have
been one of the speakers, but was pre
vented by a slight sorethroat. He
will probably be heard from on the
stump in this county later in the cam
paign.
Judge T. A. Mc Bride followed Mr.
Brownell in a short, sensible address.
The Judge called attention to the fact
that when Judge Doan went into of
fice the county was deeply in debt,
while to-day it is out of debt, with
money in the treasury. He could see
no reason why, under the circum
stances, every Republican on the
ticket should not receive the full
party vote. He hoped and believed
the entire ticket would be elected.
