THE DANGlCii OF SOCIALISM.
As the Socialists have taken part in push MM tin ler the wire first. Remember j
the present county campaign, and as that there is nothing succeeds like sue
Democrats and Prohibitionists are in- cess, and in politics, as in love and war, i
vited to unite with them in an attempt
to overthrow the Republican organi-r-'iiiin.
we present herewith some of
the planks oi the Socialist party in ti.e
State of Oregon:
1. Labor produces all wealth.
S. L'ndcr the present econoiri- and
political conditions labor's share in
the wealth it creates is merely a mean
and uncertain subsistence.
:t. So long as the present orsrmm-
tion of industry remains, the capitali t
class wnl monopolize the m icl'.incs of
production and will appropriate,
through the wage system, the wealth
created by the working class.
4. This appropriation of labor's
wealth by the capitalists is so com
plete that it enables them to live in
luxury and idleness.
5. As a necessary consequence of
this exploitation of the labnrers by the
capitalists this expropriation of all
property out of the hands of the toil
ers into the private ownership of the
holders of capital, there is an inev
itable war between the interests oi the
working class on one hand and the
interests of the capitalist class on the
other.
What is labor? The assumption of
the Socialist seems to be that there is
but one fo-m of labor the man ial.
Iajynr is infinite in its torms, varying j
from that ot the inJigent toiler to the
research and invention of tiie scien
tist, and capital is labor's tool. The
day laborer has fpr bis capital his
strength, health, and the brains with
which Nature has endowed him. If
he is endowed with a good brain and
a healthy body, and is willing to live
within his means, he soon becomes
possessed of money capital and with
this as his tool his sphere of work
widens rapidly and in time be be
comes one ot the masters cA men. But
he is still a toiler, and probably retires
to his bed at night more thoroughly
exhausted than when he swung a pick
upon the railroad. He does not live
in luxury and idleness and he has not
appropriated "labor's wealth." He
has earned, by the labor of hand and
brain, every cent of which he is pos
sessed, and in doing so he has created
employment and opportunity for
others.
Now we are told that between this
min and those less fortunate there is
an "inevitable war," and that the cap
italistic system, under which he accu
mulated his wealth, must be abolished,
and in its piare we are to have what is
called "the co-operative common
wealth, based upon the fundamental
principle of justice." The theory of
the American system of eovernment
is tflat of eltnl opportunity under tli
a-vr- democrats and Republicans
"''re meet upon a common ground
,, cln aieach other in eradicat-
ing the abuses that have been grafted
t'on this theory: but in this work the !
Socialist has no part He has noth- j
ing in common with either of the old
parties, bnt is anxious for the destruc-1
tion of both. Vet we find, here in Co-I'or defendants,
