PRIMARIES.
A few of the Republicans who do. not
belong to the machine politics of Colum
bia county are advocating the nomina
tion of countv officers by primary elec
tion. It is to le regretted that the St.
Helens ring will not permit nomination
in this manner. There arc too many Re
publicans who have an itching palm to
serve their county by way of a little
county office. Rainier Garette.
We respectfully suggest to our friend
of the Garettc that abuse of the people of
St. Helens docs not promote the feeling
of good fellowship and mutual help that
should exist between the business com
munities of Columbia County. The peo
ple of this community, with few excep
tions, favor direct primary nominations,

primai y nominations ill secure official
who are the people's choice. This is a
Republican county, and Republicans of
good standing and ability, fairly nomi
nated, will undoubtedly be elected. But
this it also an independent county, and
men who secure their nominations by
chicanery, or whom the people for any
reason do not trust, can not be elected.
The handwriting on the wall is as plain
as a patent medicine ad ou a fairgrounds
fence; and the politician who does not
heed it will find that he is up against the
real tiling.
COLUMBIA COUNTY AT THE STATE
FAIR.
Columbia is the least known of auy
County in the State of Oregon in propor
tion to its diversified advantages. It has
everything necessary to make homes for
thousands of prosperous people, and yet
it lags painfully behind the procession,
and developement is confided to a narrow
strip along the Columbia River, and is
not very marked even there. The Nc
halein country has about the same num.
ber of inhabitants it had tvrentv vears
ago, and the roads are, as then, practic-1
ally impassable for the greater portion of j
the vear. The remedv for this is develop- i

resources of the soil. Permanent settlers j
are tlie true wealth of a county, and not
those who come merely for the purpose
ef denuding theland of its timber.thongh
they fill their place by clearing the
way for the agriculturist, and making
settlement possible. No sensible man
will sacrifice the valuable timber by burn
ing it to seed the land to clover, and yet
the timber must disappear before we can
we can have populous communities, good
roads, and good schools in every section
of the county. Yet there is plenty of
good land here ready for the farmer, and
the best means to draw attention to this
is by an agricultural exhibit at the Oregon
State Fair. Of late years the fair has
been a great success, and has been at
tended by many thousands of home-seekers
from all parts of the country, Other
Counties in the State realize these facts
and are the gainers thereby. Let Colum
bia County, by its County Court, appro
priate $100 for the purpose of putting an
exhibit of grains, grasses, fruits and vege
tables at the State Fair this year, then
appoint a live rnan like Holladay of
Scappoose to get up and have charge of
the exhibit, and tha return in settlers of
the most desirable class will be great out
pf proportion to the small sum invested.

talking about the coming election and
trying to name some of the candidates
to be nominated and elected at the June

Its contention is that they should be
pominated, as they must bt elected by
fhe people.
An article in the Pacific Monthly, by
Bruce Wolverton, entitled "The Water
Powers of the Northwest," has attracted
ponsidcrabie attention from Eastern in
vestors. Such a magazine as the North
west is a great aid in the development of
pur State's unequaled resources. At the
low rate of ten cents a copy it will pay
rcgonians to purchase, rea J, and tend it
to their friends.
