DIEECT PEIdAHY NOMINATIONS.
The question of direct primary noti i-,
nations, wh.cl) is to be submitted to the
voters of Oregon at the Jane election,
Iranweiid in importance any huae the
people of Oregon w ill becailed u;o . a
that time to decide. Ti.ete is no Jorb
that it will be vigorously opp i-ed by the
bosses and wnuld-he bosses of kith the
great political parties. It is a blow at
their occupation, and they have no desire
to lie put out of business. The theory
that this is a government "of the p- oj' e,
by the people, ami for the people, " ru
der the system of Ixi-sisrn that has lieen J
evolved in Oregon of late years has been
subverted to government hy the bosses
and for the bosses, and from r ad niper
Vieor to Uovtrnor the ambitious aspir
ant lor political honors, before he can
hope to succeed, mustalign himself ith
one or the other of the factional bosses.
Meritdoes not enter into the qiiefiion,
except that the wise boss does not wor k
with dull tools; neither has politic d
principle anything to do with it, except
that the partv cloaks are used to make
the bitter medicine palatable to the old
fashioned voters who Unieve thv are
standing up fu. a certain set of prin
ciples. This is supposed to be a country in
which m ijoriiies rule, and Oregon is a
strongly Republican Stale; yet we have
a Democratic Governor, and the m.-ij r
jty of the sheritT- are Demc-Tats. It is
verjr pUiii that the cruise oi this is too
plain Irossisin. Dies anyone believe turn
air. tdrrn ti could have secured tne
nomination for Uivernor under the di
rect primary system? if elected he would
have made an excellent executive; but
he did not posse-a the personal iraits to
render hiru p tpnlar with the v iters, and
timJerthedirect primary system lie never
would have been n militated, and Kepub
Jican Oregon weald now have a R pub
lican Governor. Trie majority party in
this State should "stand pal" for thi
system, becaneo it will doawav with the
factional lights thathare heretofore been
jnade igairist the party nominees, and
hieh have resulted in so many instances
in the election of minority candidates.
Leaders are necessary, but I hey should
be chosen leaders and not selfconsti
tuted bosses, l.'nde' the direct primary
system the Republcansof this State will
Jiave an opportunity to choos. the nou.-jn-
lor w hom they desire to vo'i, and,
having so chosen, the entire ticket will
receive the practically unanimous cup j
port of the party, and the contest at the !
polls will be us nearly as possible one of j
principle, and, to a much greater extent j
than, in the past, devoid of the p r.orial-1
iUis that befog the issues and give hope
