THE L0GS1SG SITUATION.
Logi are slowly dropping In price, on
account it ia said of overproduction.
While it may be true that there ia an
oteir duclii n of logs alongthe Colum
bia river, it ia stated that t'ie demand
tor lumber for foreign shipments cannot
be filled. Some of the vesael coming to
I'ottland are unable to secure complete
cargoes, ami as a consequence freight
latea on out going shipments are going
down, Just at this time it ia evident
that more mills are needed in this sec
tion, and some of the larger logging
companies assert that if logs go dow n to
a price too low to profitably handle,
that they will put in mills to work op
their own product. The booms are full
of merchantable logs, and it ia asserted j
that VejirhsEeer, who owns thousands
of acres of burnt timber on tbe Wash
li.jton side, h; offered to supply a mil
ion feet ot logs per day for $5.50 per
thousand. The timber that waa burned
over but year, must be promptly mark
eted, or it will become worm-eaten, and
eventually will piove a total loss.
It is the probability of large quanti
ties of burnt legs being put on the mar
ket that has a tendency to bear down
the price of logs. The owners of green
timber, however, have a gold mine, but
they may have to wait awhile for re
turns, unless more mills are pat into
operation, while there is an urgent de
(and for lumber.

J, B. E. Bourne, manager of tbe Rai
nier baseball tournament, says that the
statement in The Mist last week to the
effect that Rainier did not divide the
gate receipts with Ihe other teams is in
correct and does them an injustice. The
Mist received its information from a
evident reliable source, and it waa giv
en with no other object than to give the
ntwisait existed. This paper has no
personal interest in each matters, only
to give tbe news. Mr. Bourne, how
ever, states that out of the last day's re
leipte, the St. Helens and Clatakanie
teams each received $11.40. He further
stated that be objected to dividing the
rate receipts with tbe other teams for
the reason that they could not afford it.
No extra charge waa made at the Rai
nier tournament for seats in the grand
stand, whereas at tbe last St. Helens
tournament extra charges were made
for grand stand seats. Mr. Bourne says
that he is behind about $90, on the tour
nament, as he waa at the expense of
building a board enclosure. It evident
ly does not pay to play imported talent
in baseball tournaments, as the St. Hel
ens management are alut $40 in the
hole on account of team expense at the
tournament. When team drinks $2. 50
worth of thin soda water in one after
noon at the expense of the team niana
gsr, in addition to the other expenses,
it counts up.
