The article by "X-Kay," o( Scappoose,
covers the county seat question pietty
thoraiighiv, and is wiitten without mal
ice. The argument that the county seat
should be removed because 48 w itnesses
drew mileage in one ease from Haiuier,
s not endorsed by many of the good
people of that place, who were sum
moned as unwilling witnesses. In fact,
they anticipate that it will be many
long days before there will be another
ease in the circuit court like the one
mentioned.
Congressman I..inili says that Presi
dent Kooeevelt is certain to lie re-nomi-pated
ami re-elected. President Roose
velt is again at Washington, after tra
eling 14,000 miles, timing the two
months that he was out, he delitered
gf5 speeches, and is health was perfect
t all times. At a banquet in Olympia,
he endorsed (jovemor McBride for fight
Jug the railroad merger in spite of the
protests of the politicians.
The County Court at its late session
checked up and ezperted the books of
Sheriff Hattan. Everything was found
as straight as a string, and correct to
.date. As Mr. Hattan is not a candidate
ior re-election, a republican paper can
not be accused of whooping it up for
the opposition when it gives a man his
justduer.
The reading matter in this paper is set
close on account of the numerous sd'. cr
ti'ements. The advertising patronage
S this paper has almost doubled during
the past year, and the snlaerintions
Jiave increased a couple of hundred.

It has not yet been shown that it will
advantageous iu anyway whatever to
move the count seat to any other tow n.
Ths- permanent residents of this count
will not vote for a removal, or ought
not to do so, at least, unless they are
ftuly satisfied that the county seat in
some other town than its present loca
tion would lie of advantage to the per
il. anent residents of the whols ronntv.
The interests of the whole of Columbia
county, and not ona particular part, or
town 111 it, is involved in this matter,
and should lie so considered and voted
on. The best interests o( the whole
county in this matter should be the
mainissie. Other things 'being eqaal,
the county seat should be located in the
most accessible and convenient place in
the conntv.
Let 111 look at this matter of accessi
bility. How- many avenues of aires,
has each of the towns which are candi
date for the count seat? Clatskanie
cau lie reached by railroad and wairon
roada; Rainier by railroad and b boat;
and Jst. Helens can be reached b rail
road and wagon roads. Tkj msj..ritv of
the taxpayers of Columbia count trav
el on the wagon roads. St. Helens is
the only town in the county that can he
rescl.ed lonvenientl by the three mois
of ttavel. It is the most convenient for
most of the people living in the county,
and also (or those outside of the county
who have businesa to transact in the
count seat. The important thing in
the location of a county seat is to bare
it in the town most "accessible to the
greatest number o' permanent residents
in all parts of the couaty. This talk
about a ceatral location is one of the va
garies of an Utopian dream? Conven
ience, or accessibility, is more impor
tant than geography.
Finally, what would be the use of
moving the county seat, increasing our
burden of taxation, and disccoiiiinnding I
our county businese, w hen the count
seat is already in as convenient snd ac-
eesible a place as there 1 in the
county? X RAV.

In the first opening of Oklahoma to

was among the many seekers after fort

in April, thiring bis traveling aliout
and afterwards his camping Uion bis

which together with the severe heat,
gave him a very severe diarrhoea which
it seemed almost impossib e to check,
and along in June the case became so
bad he expected to die. One day one
of bis neighbors brought him one small
bottle of Chambet Iain's Colic, Cholera
and Iiiarrhoea Remedy as a last hope.
A big dose was given biin while hu wua
I rolling aliout on the ground in great ag-

little Wile worked a complete cure,
and he cannot help but feel grateful.

Cured Me.
No matter what's the
matter with your
heart, it will pay yoa to try Llr. Miles' Heart
Cure. It is a great heart and blood tonic
that curen by removing the cause. Try it for
a short time and you will find that you are
no longer short of breath after brief exertion;
that you can aleep in any position with com
fort and without the dread of smothering
spells.. It removes the symptoms and cures
the disease. It strengthens the heart's
action, enriches the blood and improves the
circulation. It has cured heart disease when
all else failed. It has brought relief when
death seemed nigh.
