"It 1 no buslnc of mine," ahe

"Mia Milne!" I said, sternly.
"t have no objection, I any, to you
marrying Miss Fclham," ahe contin

In the way -that "
"What do you mean?" I aald. "What
fresh devHtry are you browing? Are

For, aa thmiRh the blight of bar at

bad yet another curaa In store for me,
"Do you think," aha asked, turning

I live Colonel Pelham will never allow
you to marry bla daughter? He will,
of courae, think of me alwaya aa he
knew me; and perhaps, aftnr all, I am

"How do you know all that?" I
' asked.
"I guessed part. I dreamed the rent.
Am I right? Why do you hesitate?
Am 1 never again to have an atom of

f did not atay to Inquire bow ahe

Into me. She waa alwaya either aub

are right, but"
"Hut what?"
' "But although your ntotlvea may be.
and, I think, are changed, you can not
help maj you can not possibly "
"I am not ao aure of that." ahe re
plied: and then, with little laugh;
"I ran do a good deal when 1 try."
Then ahe rose to her feet, and holding
-"-it her band, aald: "I am going to

day or two. There muat lie eonie road

Then ahe put out her hand to go.
"Oood nlKbt. Dr. Msby. Do you be

" CHAPTER XX. :'
Thore was quite a crowd around the
pier as the Pinafore came slowly
In to take away her first load of con
valescents. They were gathered In lit
tle knots about the beach, and a I
passed through them I heard the same
old murmur of discontent, but now
mingled with loud complaints of the
Injustice of sending a woman and her
children, who bad the smallpox,
straight from the hopltal Inclosure,
while they, only suspect, bad been
kept week after week, and, for ll
they knew, would be kept for week
to come. ,
Who are going?" I Baked a I came
up with our old superintendent, whose
thirty years' reign here was closed so
aoddenly and ao ignomlnlously by the
Royal Commission three months later.
Mrs. Warren and her family, Char
ley and the nurse," replied be, with a
grunt that expressed hla dissatisfac
tion at the whole arrangement, and
added: "There' some favoritism .go
ing on, doctor, I know."
In a few momenta, Mrs. Warren,
who had throughout acted well tbe
part of a widow, and her supposed
orpbana, appeared In Bight. Notwith
standing their Jealousy, there were but
four people looking on whose hearts
were not moved by tbe mournful pro
cession, a It wended Its way down tbe
steep cliff that led from the hospital
Inclosure. The Government had aent
down an outfit of mourning for each
of them, and aa they flourished their
bite handkerchiefs line motner, aa
an affective feature in me part Bne
waa playing, the eldest girl, I am sure,
from real Borrow, the rest probably
from the force of example, every heart
(but four) waa moved, and aome of
the women and children to actual
tear. And the four exceptiona were:
First Mis Milne, who saw the em
barkation, I had no doubt, but from
what outlook I had no idea; Warren,
who from tbe early morning had taken
up hla position amid some rock well
away toward the Heads; Charley, who
on the veranda of the police station
waa wishing bis mates good-bye; and
myaelf, standing with one foot on the
boat and one foot on the pier, waiting
to help them on board.
When the children were comfort
ably aettled, I drew Mrs. Warren aaido
to the top or me pier.
"Are you going back." I asked, "to
your old quarters in Sussex street?"
"I think bo, doctor; I have nowhere
elae to go."
Well, at any rate," I ania, arter a
nauae. "you naa oeiter, oireciiy you
are aettled, send me a note to the
Australian Club, saying where you
are, and stay quiet until I come, which
will be within a week. If the Govern
ment agent calla on you, take, nothing
in final aettlement until I have seen
you; take enougb, though, to keep you
going; Warren will not be able to
come near you."
"All aboard!" the captain Bhouted,
aa I led her back to the boat.
Just then Charley came rushing
down and- Jumped over the aide.
"All aboard!" again Bhouted tne
captain, and then Charley, with a hur
ried glance around, stepped on to the
pier again. ut
