Company. Bot h of the new atockholders
are here, and will take an active in
terest in the managemeut of the mill .
The mill, which haa been cloeed down
for several davs past ou account of a
scarcity of veilow fir logs, will again be
ready for operation in a day or two .
The company will soon have logs enough
to keep them runuing steadily tor some
time to come. There waa uo trouble to
secure cheup red fir logs, but the com
pany wanted good yellow fir logs, and
they now have plenty in sight.

the Rainier Gazette of last week takes
the bun. On October 24th, Thc Mibt
had an item about E. E. Quick and fam
ily going to Washington county to at

Gasette did not discover that fact nntil
last week.

and the work now presents an air of
solid permanency and literary mrrit,
that bodes well for it future prosperity.
The serials and short stories are models
of excellence, and the iiluetra'ed write
ups of sectional features of the state of
Washington are very interesting.
Aseseor-elct A. F, Laws intends to
build a substantial dwelling on the lots
recently purchased adjoining Assessor
Martin White's residence property. He
would bave had the slructnre under way
before this, but lumber could not be se
cured. All the small mills that have
planners, are from 35,000 to 40.000 feet
in their orders, and it takes a little time
to get lumber for building purposes.
Attorney R. P. Graham, of Portland,
formerly of St. Helens, has made a prop
osition on behalf of the Bennett estate,
to the Municipal authorities, to com
promise a claim for the death of Silas
llenuett. Bennett was killed on Oct
ober 10! h by the breaking of the Corbett
street bridge. Mr. Graham explains
that he prefers a compromise for $4,000
to instituting a suit for $j,000 as the
statute allows.
The name of Mrs. F. A. Gruber men
tioned in last weeks issue, as teacher of
the Warren Brass Band wns a mistake
and should have read Mr. F. A. Gruher.
Owing to the severity of the weather and
the distance, it will be impossible for
him to continue his instructions. How
ever a very capable instiuctorand leader
haa been secured in Charles Larson,
who formerly held the same position in
the Chemawa Brass Baud near Salem.
3. H. Westover, the new editor and
proprietor of the Oregon City Courier
Herald is making a live paper. He is
from Kentucky, hut taught school at
Hnbbard about 26 years ago. One of
hid former pupils states that Grant Dim
ick, the present mayor of Oregon City,
was a feiiow student, and that Westover
gave Grant one of the worst "lii-kitigs"
that he ever seen a boy got, as punish
ment for some misdemeanor.
