Steaater Hassal Raked By Cypreaeas
Jlbbaeat.
Tha 0. B. A N. wo.'s crank stern-
wheeler Uaesalo waa in eollisioa with
the British ship Cypromene near Coffin
Rock at an early hour Saturday morn
ing, aad aa a result ia now lying at tbe
repair yard ia North Portland with her
upper works on the port side totally
wrecked. That a number of lives were
not lost borders on the miraculous, for
every stateroom that waa wrecked was
occupied, and in some of them' the
heavy jibboom ot the Cypromene
knocked down the Upper bertha and
tumbled the oceupants and tha wreck
age down onto those below. The dam'
jage to the Hassalo is estimated at from
16000 to $10,000, and the extent to which
the ship suffered, if any, baa not been
ascertained, aa. she continued on her
journey to Astoria yesterday, and did
not arrive down until late in the after
noon. It is behaved, however, that it
waa not serious, aa the light upper work
ef the Hassalo offered but little resist
ance to tbe onslaught of tha jibboom and
heavy headgear of the ship.
Tha Cypromene, in tow of the Okla-
hama, left down Saturday morning, and
anchored for tha night near Coffin Rock,
a abort distance below Kalama. The
Hassalo, under command of Captain
Edward Sullivan, left Portland at 10
o'clock Saturday evening, and reached
Kalama shortly after midnight. At
Kalama, Captain Sullivan, turned the
boat over to tbe pilot, but bad not i
tired when the accident happened.
There waa a thick fog, and it is reported
that the ship's bell was not ringing
when tha Haasalo bore down upon her,
although the fog whistle of the steamer
waa kept going at regular interval.
The towboat which bad the " shin in
enarge bad left ner and waa at a
neighboring dock taking oa wood.
