of
Joseph rVliuikowski waa found dead
In the bruhh seven miles from St. Hel
ens, December 27. Everything indi
cated that murder most foul bad been
committed in cold blood. Robery ap
lieared to have been the motive. The
bnty was found nudor a log, where it
had evidently been placed in effort to
conceal ft. There were two gunshot
wound in the body and tho pockets of
the dead man hud been rifled.
There was no clue to the murderer,
apparently.
District Attorney Allen went to work
on the case, but at first the prospects
were anything but encouraging. Then
began a minute scrutiny for evidence
that would point to the assassin. Tbey
Roon 'developed. The murdered man
was Ideiitilied aa Joseph Schulkoweki,
who had been living w ith the Schieve
sillily, six and one-half miles from
.where the body was discovered. In
quiry developed the fact that the young"
man had left the Schieve homo the day
after Christmas to go to Portland.
When lie loft ho had a sum of. money in
a belt, which he woru strapped around
his waist. Tliia money was gone when
the body was found. The dead man.
had ben living at'ehieve's.
Such was tho sum total of facts Ukiii
which to' run down "the murderer. The
proepectB for success were not encourag
ing. Itlookeas though the cold-blooded
assassin would never be apprehended.
Intent upon becoming thoroughly fa
miliar with the scene of the criino, the
presenting oiueorexairiiiied the locality
iu w hich the corpse was disclosed. It
soon became npparant that tlie. crime
had been perpetrated several yards from
where the body lay when found. The
murder was committed upon an un
frequented road, and the body bad been
dragged into an underbrush by tho as
sassin and concealed, partly, by a log.
Close scrutiny of the ground at tlie scene
of the tragedy iu tlie road revealed the
fiuit that a horse had been iu that
vicinity about the time of, the murder.
Measurements of the hoof prints wero
taken as a possible clew. Next were
found a few horse hairs, of a white color,
lying on the ground. Their discovery
was quite accidental and, while not con
sidered of any particular importance,
were carefully noted. A bullet was ex
tracted from the body of the doad man
and near tho place of the shooting, was
an empty 112-20 Winchester ritlu shell.
Soon a theory was formed, based upon
theso discoveries which subsequently
proved correct in the eyes of the jury.
It was argued that tlio assassin had been
on horseback; that tho horse was white
or had considerable white hair; that the
shot widen killed Scbulkowski came
from a gun using ft 32-20 Winchester
shell. The first thing to do was to find
a white horsrt whose hoof woubl corres
pond with those found ut the scene of
tho crime. It developed that August

guilty of the wry highest crime known
to the law, and it now becomes my duty
to pronounce the judgment of the law
upon yon. I am mindful of the fact
this is a very solemn duty, and one the
court cannot escape, and the verdict is
one the jury could not escape, and there
is no escaping for you. Do not flatter
yourself in the brief time that the law
allows yon, with any hope that this
judgment is likely to be reversed. In
my judgment, speaking from a great
deal of experience, you have no hope of
that, and so it only remains for you in
the brief time that the court shall allow
in this case, to make such atonement as
you can for the offense you have com
mitted. There is no hope in an oflience
such as you have committed, that you
will ever experience or receive any re
prieve or pardon from any power oh
earth, and thersis for you but one source
