. in ,r01" Multnomah county had a
thrilling experience at a very early hour
Tuesday morning, so much eo, Indeed,
that none of the members of theollicial
party have any deelreto re-engage in
like exploit (or tha mere cake of the
thing. The gentlemen from Multnomah
county arrived here at a late hour Mon
day night, and eliciting the aatlstanc
of Sheriff Huttan in their cause of run
ning down a culprit, who was known to
be in the viefnit nf R-a
and hack were secured, ami a start made
through the intense darkness for the
objective point. A disastrous and much
unlooked-for interruption to the favora
ble start off soon occurred. In fact, the
party had proceeded less than a block
from the stable when the occupant
of th hack were picking themselves op
from the ground, and the team was
heard to he hieing itaelf away through
the darkness at a rapid pace. .
Thia part of , the performance of an
official duty was more than two of the
Multnomah tenderfeet could stand, and
accordingly they embarked on a return
ing steamer (or their borne in the citv.
Undannted, however, Bheriff flatten
and Mr. Reeder, the officer who had
been shadowing th offender, started
afoot and alone for their desired point,
arriving lust aa the Bret rays of daylight
appeared in the eastern skv, and after
carrying into execution their previous
plant, succeeded in capturing their man
without difficulty or delay, being found
at tha McKay place, near Scappoose.
The name of the party Is Robert Mc
Quinn, wanted for disregarding an al
leged promise to marry a voung woman
named Eva Reeder, but in Wednesday
morning's Oregonfan la noticed the
atatement that a marriage licence had
been issued to the parties, so it la pre
tumed the differences have been ami
cably adjusted, and the young man
brought to the stern realisation that a
promts should not be made for the
same purpose that pie crut ia made for.
The runaway team was found later, in
a ditch near town, practically uninjured,
and the hack has just emerged from the
vlllsge blacksmith shop, and thus what
might have been an even mora exciting
chapter it brought to a sudden ending.
