eatlmated at between $2,600,000 and

Train Robbers Tried to Hold Up th Overland
Express Near Kearney.

Kearney, Neb, The bandit placed a

A pedaetrian traveling along the track

pouueed upon, severely beaten, and

Kalama, Wash., Jan. 28. Martin
Stickel waa banged in tbe jail yard at
9:87 o'clock Friday morning, for the
murder of W. B. Sbanklin, near Kelso
in November, 1899. Stickel was taken
from the oell at 9:46 by Sheriff Hunt
ington and four attendanta. He
walked to tb scaffold unassisted, and
asoended tbe step with steady tread.

like a man. He stepped to the center
of the trap door, stood ereot and said:
"Gentlemen, I bid yoo good-by.
God help yon; God forgive me. Thi

me; take me now."
By the time the last words were
spoken, the sheriff and hi attendanta
