There is nothing surprising in thia

know that Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for
Pale People are so compounded that
they act aimultaneously on the blood
and nerves. They tone op the system

In the above case. Their power in re
building watted nerve tissne make
them invaluable in the treatment of
partial paralysis, and to this fact Mra.

after years ot useless but expensive
treatment.

An old Danish galley was recently
dug up In England, while an excava

are of oak and elm anil they are well

the time of Alfred the Great, which
would make It over oue thousand year

of animals now extinct in England
were also found. I
Some of the vast changes which the

Indicated by the recent discovery In th

tlnct volcanoes of Auvergue in France
of the survival of certain forma of ma

rocks and created mountain peak and
craters.
It baa been asserted that Insects are
particularly attracted by the colors of
certain flower. Felix Plateau, after
Investigating the conduct of Insect In
tbeir visits to various Sowers, con
clude that while they may perceive
colors and thua be enabled to distin
guish, at a distance, between flower
and leaves, yet they show no prefer
ence among the different colors. Blue,
red, yellow, white are Indifferent to
them. He thinks that the odor of flow
ers affects Insect more than their col
ors do.
The experiments of the French grape
growers in Algeria have shown that
too much sunshine Is unfavorable for
the making of good wine. In the more
temperate climate of France grape
posses a proper proportion ot sugar
to acid for wine making, but the hot
Algerian sunshine induce so active an
assimilation by the vines that the
quantity of acid is reduced and that of
sugar 1 Increased. In consequence,
the wine maker of Algeria are driven
to many device tor Improving the fla
vor and lasting quality ot their wine.

Geologists Have Discarded the OM No
tion About Glacial Movement.
A few years ago geologists confident
ly aserted that at one period of the
world's history a great Ice cap came
moving down from the polar regions
and swept over North America a far
south a latitude 38, carrying with It
! great bowlder which lie about on
J (lopes and hilltops to this day to prove
it and scratching the record of Us
movement upon cliffs and ledges. Then
this ice cap kindly melted and disap
peared. This was taught In the schools,
and to doubt It was heresy; for science,
when It takes up with a theory, I dog
matic, and all geologist said: "Behold,
bow wonderful Is our knowledge; what
secret we can wrest from the past!'
After a while science rather gave up
the polar Ice cap theory and laid down
new dogma that of a single conti
nental ice sheet for North America.
The recent Investigations of officers
of the Canadian geological survey
prove that the scientists evolved their
glacial theory out of a vivid Imagina
tion. It has been found that In north
ern Alaska there is no evidence that
that part of the country ever was cov-
( ered by a glacier In ' fact, conclusive
evidence exists that it was not At the
mouth of the McKcnzle River Is plenty
' of evidence of glacial action, and also
that the glacier which left Its records
came from the south. On the western
shores of Hudson Bay are mark of a
glacier which came from the west, and
on the eastern shores of one which
came from the east East of the Cana
dian Rockies is a long belt which shows
no evidence of ever baring been ex
posed to glacial action.
These and similar discoveries have
put the geologists "all at sea," and they
now have evolved a new theory regard
ing the glacial period. It Is that one
big glacier did not at one time cover
all the North American continent, but
that several glaciers, moving at differ
ent times from different center of dis
tribution, made their way In different
directions and left the glacial records
which are now found. They have even
given names to these glaciers, such as
tlie "Cordilleran glacier," the "Labra
dorlan glacier" and the "Keewatln gla
cier." Prof. Lawson, of the University
of Califo: n'a, In writing on the subject
In the International Monthly, says that
a yet It cannot be said that the suc
cession of these great glaciers In time
has been established well enough to
warrant an unqualified acceptance, but
be seem to have little hesitation In ac
cepting the theory of different glacier
moving from different points.
HE FOUND ONE HONEST TOUT,
Man from the Bace Track Wbo Treated
a Htrang-er an I Won Oat,
Among the passengers on an elevated
train the other night was a party of
men returning from the race track, and
from the unmistakably good humor
tbey displayed it was clear that they
bad succeeded la getting some of the
bookies' money. They were talking of
the dishonest people met at a race
track, and the gcu. ral opinion seemed
ta be that to And a half-way decent
sort of tout waa a task few cared to
uudertake. Everybody was pon mlstlc
till a man who bad relralmd tiotn ex
preeslug an opinion said: ,
"I've been listening to yon fotka tell
your experiences, ami when yon aay

to tell you of a little experience I had
With one of those fellows last week,
and I'm sure that w hen I get through
you will say a I do, that there Is a
good one to be found now and then.
I'd been playing Id the hardest kind of
luck all day. and when It came time for
the fifth race I bad no great trouble In
countlog my roll, which amounted to
Just $3.80. I picked out a long shot a
a last hope, and I went around In quest
of the best odd. Soon I ran across a
book that was laying 10 to 1 to win.
' ,,. 4 to 1 a place, and I waa about
to
h,nil m. k,h ot to win and 13 fne
1.1,, when an arm waa thrust
over my shoulder and a voice exclaim
ed: 'Five straight and place,' and the
owner of the arm tnent'onrd the name
of the very horsr I had Intended to
play. The bookmaker took the money.
Then, before I could open my mouth,
he put down the odds. I said I was In
line, and he should have taken my bet
flrst, and it was tough to be shut out
that way when a fellow was down to
his last few dollars, but It wasn't any
use.
"Just then the man who'd got ahead
of me said: 'Say, I can understand just
bow you feel, and I'll take you on for a
place bet at least' This struck me as
being a kind proposition, and we settled
that he should take my whole S3 for a
place at 4 to 1. lie hurried away from
me as soou as he got my five, and then
It occurred to me that maybe I wa up
against It for I bad recognised my kind
friend as one of the best-known touts at j
the big tracks. The horse I had picked
won the race, and with little hope of
ever feeing the fellow again I went
over to the free field to And him. I
couldn't and wa on my way back to
the grand stand calling myself a
chump, when I heard some one yelling
at me and saw one of the bookmaker
beckoning. I walked over to him, and
he was the man wbo had shut me out
on the bet I waa going to make.
' 'Ain't yon the man that made a bet I
with a fellow here a while ago on so
and so for a p'aeer he said. I answered
that I was, snd be tokl me that he bad
something that was left by a man for
me. Ton can Imagine my surprise when
he handed me out S23 with the explana
tion that my friend was In a hurry and
could not wait so had left the money
for me. As I counted the money I
thought hard, and since then I take
credit for having discovered the flrst
honest tout any of us has ever known."

Crooked Uonses in Holland.
There are many buildings In cities
In Holland which were originally and
unmistakably built out of the straight.
For Instance, not far from the Hotel
Vleux Doelen, where the delegate to
the peace conference stayed, there Is
an extension being built to one of the
churches, and, although the walls are
not yet completed, tbey lean outward
more than twelve Inches. Another In
stance of this Is found In some of the
corner bouses, whose wall lean out
over each street In many case new
bouses are evidently put up to match
the houses alongside. Strangely enough,
though, there are comparatively few
cases on record of collapse.
