EWti who are not registered and
who desire to vote at the Presidential
election, should lose no time in prepar
ing the means for so doing. Registra
tion blank to be witnessed by six free
holders can be obtained at the County
Clerk' office, and these should be
sworn to before any Notary Public or
Justice of the Peace. Young men who
have become 21 year old since June,
and who were deprived of registration
before, must fill out registration blanks,
and ought to do so immediately. Per
sons who have full cltisenshlp papers
who are not registered and who are
otherwise qualified, should also have
certificates filled out at once, If they do
not want to be deprived of their votes.
Some people are wonderfully gener
ous, but not to iuch degree as to cause
any aurreptious depletion of their fi
nances, however. The following from
Tuesday's Oregonian i a splendid ex
ample of some peoples' abundant gener
osity: "The story comes from Salem
that a Populist Sheriff took a convict to
the Penitentiary, and upon going to the
Secretary of State's office to get his
warrant for expenses, asked one of the
clerks to make out the formal claim.
The clerk figured up the expenses in
curred by the Sheriff and made out the
claim against the State for the total,
119.06. The Sheriff, grateful for the
fnvor, told the clerk to give him the
119 and keep th 6 oent to pay him for

The style of the official ballot to be
used In the election next Tuesday and
the manner and place to mark it ap
pears elsewhere in these columns this
week. At the right hand margin of ihe
ballot appears the names of the candi
dates for President and Vice-President
opposite the group of the name of the
Presidential Electors representing that
party.. In the form of the ballot ns it
appears printed today, betweeu the
number and name of the four Republi
can Presidential electors appears an
"x", indicating the manner and place
you are to mark your ballot. Since the
Australian ballot law has been in vogue
there has been no Bimplor form of bal
lot Issued than the present pne, and
voters should experience no difllculty in
properly marking it. In the form
which appears this week is contained all
the information that will appear in the
ballot which yon will bo required to
vote next Tuesday, and a careful pe
rusal of it will be a help to the voter
when he enters the voting booth.
Dr. II. R. Cliff returned last Saturday
night from a trip to England, whence
h went over two month ago. He re
ports a delightful trip and a most pleas
ant visit with his relatives and to the
scenes of his boyhood. While In Eng
land he called upon Captain James
Good' mother, visiting the old home of
that gentleman, a did he also visit the
mother of Mr. Arthur Ueorge, of this
city. The doctor says that with all the
wealth of England and his natural in
clination to admire the place of his
birth, he had no desire to remain there.
America, in every respect, savs the
doctor, is far superior to England, and
he was overjoyed to return to the land
of his adoption. The voyage from
Liverpool to Philadelphia consumed
thirteen day time, his vessel exper
iencing the most extremely severe
weather the entire time. Dr. gained
fifteen pound In weight and show
other evidence ol a thoroughly enjoy
able trip.

a "Happy Jack," received hi sentence
from Judge McBride in the Circuit
Court in this city last Friday morning
for the offense of slugging a Chinaman
on th train while en route from Port

learned of Farrel he has always been a
more or lens disturbing element, and
while under the influence of liquor, he
made himself particularly obnoxious.
The Court sentenced Farrel to seventy-

time of pronouncing sentence took occa
