For the past year negotiations for
the oale of the plaut have none for-
ward. The deal was to have included
valuable iron deposits on Texada isl
and, IS. C, but the owners of the lat-1
ter piojKfrty, tho I'nget Sound Iron,
Company, which is composed of the
stockholdeta of the Iroudale proterty,
refused to dispose of the island irou
mines, so the furuace machinery and a
lartie amount of land at and near Iron
dale was sold without the iron mines
iu British Columbia.
On the lauds iuclnried in the deal,
hut lyiua some miles from the furnace
at Iroudale, are valuable iron deposits
anil ore from the mines there was used
in connection with Texada ore during
the time the furuace was iu operation.
The comliiuing of the two ores made ex
cellent iron, and a lai'iie amount of it
was used iu the roustructiou of the
erusier Charleston, built by the Union
Iron Works.
There are other valuable deposits of
iron in Jeffersou county, in the Olym
pio mountains, bordering on Hood
canal, and easv of access to the Iron-
dale works. These iron deposits have
Iwen thoroughly piospeeted by expeits
during the past six year, who weie
here in the interest of Mr. Hill, and
the belief here is that the works at
Irondale will be put in operation again.
The iron works, including machinery,
cost 1750,000, but at present are not
worth half that, and to put the furnace
in oiieration again would require an
expenditure of $200,000. The hot
oven is a wieck, the stack out of date,
the air compressor being about all the
machinery that could 1 utilized to ad
vantage. It is doubtful if the woiks
will be run again as a smelting plaut,
but the purchase of the property may
be with a view of putting in a ship
building plant.
