Bradstreet's says: A further subsid
ence of demand and leveling of prices
is noted in several lines this week, this
leveling being no doubt aided by the
uueottliug effeut of the rather more
than usually disturbed considerations
in labor circles, its net result ia some
thing approaching dullness In many
chaunela of distribution, increased con
servatism in tha making of ventures
aud a disposition to digest business al
ready arranged for before making new
engagements. That the basic condi
tions of general business, such as the
outlook for oroas, the export demand
aud the inoreased purchasing power of
the people at large, have not been
much reduood, but. on the contrary,
actually improved, seeing evident from
the advices received this week.
Business at wholesale ia relatively
quieter, which ia not unusual at this
period, but more than ordinarily mark
ed attention is being concentrated upon
retail demand, which is, of course, re

be stated that relatively best reports

Andrew Carnegie on Traits.
I A director of the Maudard Oil Com
pany has recently published in the In
dependent an article declaring trusts
to be good for the worktiiRtnan. To
the May Century, Andrew Caruegtu of
the Carnegie Company, which rivals
the Htandurd Oil for first place among
the world's great corporations, will
contribute an essay taking the same
ground. In this article, which bears
the title "Popular Illusions About
Trusts, " the great steel manufacturer
argues that the evils of trusts ars gen
erally self-corrective; that no trust can
live loug unless it secures a virtual
monopoly of the commodity it djula iu;
aud that "the only people who have
reason to fear trusts are those who trust
thoin." In the sitme magazine "The
Real Dangor ot Trust" their menace
to the Independence of the individual
and the state will be pointed out iu
vigorous editorial.

Compliment With a Sting.
Talk about delightfully put compli
ments. I heard a girl at a supwr de
liver horsuli of a perfect jewel the other
night. She leaned across the table
the table next to mo to say it, and she
meant well.
"Oh, Miss Dumdum," she said, cor
dially, "I've gut a trade-last for you."
A swap?" asked Miss Dumdum,
beaming with anticipatory delight.
Uhhuh," answered the other.
"Lieut. Bulbul said it."
"Oh, do tell ill" pleaded Miss Dum
dum, eagerly.
"It wis an awfully nice one," said
the first gril, "and Lieut. Bulbul meant
it too. He tald you waltaed divinely.
He said he was awfully surprised, too,

The Small-Minded Man.
"Well," said the small minded man.
"1 have found out another woman s

"How did you do it? asked tha
listener.
"Why, I asked her suddenly how
many years it wits since 1873."
"But bow did you find out her age?"
"Hlie figured it up by subtracting
five from Si before she thought." In
