SPLENDID SENTIMENT.
"The candidate, both Republican
and Union nominees, whose curds ap
pear in the hews, are men who have
signified their willingness to accept the
nomination and their intention to make
the beat race possible. All the men
nominated are, so far we know, good
men and are the peers of the electorate
of Columbia county. Personally we have
not a word to say against any of the can
didates." Columbia County News.
The above is splendid sentiment and
should be the adopted and steadfastly
adhered-to rale of all newspapers.
What individuals say cannot be helped.
The Mist stated two weeks ago that the
nominees on both tickets in this connty
were representative gentlemen, and it
till holds farm to the same idea. The
nominees on the Fusion ticket are rep
resentatives of a code of political princi
ples in which the editor of this paper
does not coincide, and as we place prin
ciple above personality, and with an
abiding faith in the Republican party to
do more and better things for the coun
try, we conscientiously and earnestly
invite the sovereign people of our good
county to support and vote for the nom
inees of the Republican party. They
are every one to a man, clean, compe
tent persons, and their conduct of pub
lic affairs has gained them the confi
dence and esteem of the people.
One of the most deplorable conditions
of American politics is the conduct of
many of the newspapers of opposing
parties, after candidates are nominated
for office, to continue through the cam
paign preceding the election, a persist
ent and continuous practice of commun
icating defamatory stories regarding the
character and integrity of opposing
candidates. That members of society
and neighbors shall meet socially and
transact business together pleasantly
for nearly all the intervening time be
between elections, and as soon as one is
nominated to run for an office, his
neighbor or local newspaper shall begin
attacks upon bia life and conduct, is a
practice that should be and is con
demned by every good citizen. This
paper will endeavor to abstain from tbe
class of journalism indicated, preferring
that its efforts shall be conducted as a
business enterprise. But, however, in
so doing, we will not forget or neglect
to support and maintain true Republi
can principle. We do this because it is
our honest belief, and we accord to
every individual in the land the same
privilege. Individuals are not principle
any more than defamation of character
Is argument. We will support and
uphold Republican doctrines and re
port the passing events of the day in a
reliable manner, and thus endeavor to
be at all timet a helpful instrument for
the public good, In our mind no man
is bigger than the Republican party,
hence our support will be for all tbe
the ticket all the time.
In the semi-annual statement of the
financial condition of the county issued
on the 1st of this month by the county
officers, covering the period from Octo
ber 1st, 1890, to April 1st, 1000, appears
some interesting reading matter tor the
people ot this county. The statement,
which appears in another column of this
paper this week, shows the ToUl liabili
ties of tbe county to be :SO,3S7. To off
set that amount there is $10,360 of this
year's taxes remaining uncollected on
the roll now in the hands of the sheriff,
and if we are to judge the future by the
past, it is safe to say that at least 18,000
of that amount will be paid to the county
within the next two or three months,
which will reduce the indebtedness to
considerably lesi than 16,000. Besides
that amount of resources which is cer
tain to be realised, it will be noticed
that the county holds liena ou lands to
the amount of over flS.OOO. This sura
may not all be realized in principal, but
it is very safe to say that the county will
collect enough of the principal, which,
with the 30 per cent interest charged,
will easily net the sum total of liens
held. As evidence that the county Der
ailed a business-like method when it re
solved to bid in lands and take liens
against it for unpaid taxes, the records
in the County Clerk's office show that
within the past two years many thous
and dollars have accrued to the county
as a direct result of that proceeding.
During the six months ending on the
31st oi March last past, there has been
almost f2000 of liens paid, the exact
figures being $1879.97. The affairs of
the county have been very ably managed
during the past few years, and a contin
uance of the same methods will soon
see the public debt almost entirely paid.
JUSTIFIES HIS VOTE.
Senator McBride Not Disposed to
Follow Democratic Lead.
The Dalles Chronicle last Wednesday
contained the following:
"Senator Simon says the overwhelm
ing sentiment of bis people compels him
to vote against the Puerto Rican tariff
bill. Malcolm A. Moodv voted for the
bill. Since then Republican conven
tions have been held in ten couuties out
of sixteen in his district, and from
these if one single vote will go to the
Congressional convention against Mr.
Moodv, there is not a man in Oregon
knows it. The Senator had better put
his ear to the ground again."
Referring to the above Senator Mc
Eride telegraphs as follows :
"Washington, D. C, April 10, 1900.
"Hcoh Goislat, Editor Chronicle:
"I am gratified to learn that Republi
cans of Eastern Oregon sustain the vote
of an overwhelming majority of the
Republican Senators and Republican
Representatives in Congress on tbe civil
government and revenue bill for Puerto
Rico. I voted for the hill because it is
right. It removes 85 per cent of the
duties now in force and empowers the
Puerto Rican legislature to substitute
its own system of revenue for the tem
porary measure provided in the bill. I
cannot believe the people of Oregon de
sire me to vote against the only practi
cable measure of present relief for the
distressed people ol Puerto Rico nor to
impose upon these impoverished people
the burdens of our own internal revenue
and war revenue taxes instead of the
very low tariff left in effect by the bill
upported by the Republican majority.
I am not disposed to accept the advice
nor follow the leadership of the Demo
cratic party either on constitutional or
economic questions.

The donble train service estab

leaving Portland at 9:15 a. m., begin
ning on the date named, will be known
as tbe Chicago-Portland special. Its
equipment will be new, making it fully
the equal of any train now in service
from the Pacific Coast to the East. It
will consist of a mail car, baggage car,
a library-composite car, a firm-class
Pullman sleeper, a dining car, two chair
cars and a touiist sleeper. There will
be but one change of cars to all Eastern

and give immediate connection with
the Washington division at Pendleton.
At this point there is a large interchange
of traffic on account of the various min
ing districts of Baker county, the Couer
d' Alene, the Republic and Kootenai
mining camps. Portland is greatly bene
fitted by this change, inasmuch as in
creased service is given from Easern
Oregon and Idaho.
Train No. 2 will arrive in Chicago at
9:30 a.m.; No. -0 at 7:45 a. m., as at
present.
The Westbound train out of Chicago,
