Taooma, Duo. 12. A mine explosion

killed 83 men. Identification of the
dead men la almost lmixmnitilo, The
scraps of clothing that still cling to the
bodies of the men are carefully pre
served, laid aside and labelled to aid iu
the identification. Frenxied relatives
of tho missing men gathered at the
mouth of the mine and watched eagerly
to catch a gllinpsn of the form as they
were hurried by to the coroner's ollloe.
The work of rescue is being rushed
forward, but it may be days before the
last blackened form la taken from the
mine, for many men are believed to lie
buried under masses of earth and rock,
To extrloate them will take time, and
thus far tho work of rescue has been
pushed forward at the extreme endur
ance of the workers, for the black
damp and noxious gasos have driven
the rescuers back roieatudly.
When the explosion occurred a rush
of the inhabitants was made in the di
rection of the mouth of tho tunnel.
Women, the wives of the men supposed
to be in the shift, ran to and fro,
soreaming ami wringing their hands
with anguish, crying children clinging
to their skirts.
It was all that D. T. Davie the
superintendent of the mine, could dc
to stop the wives and friends of the,
doomed miners from plunging madly
into the tunnel's mouth.

The philosophy of Dead Oameneie.
"Now," said the man who had
yearned for riches, "I will go forth to
day and risk once more. Success has
attended all my ventures. I have $0,
000,000. if all goes woll today I will
be ten time a millionaire. Then I
will risk no more. Then 1 will be con
tent and some one else may step into
the place that 1 leave vacant." Ho ho
risked again and won the $10,000 that
ho thought he needed in his business;
but the man who lost the money was
not dead game, If he had been dead
game he would have said nothing and
hoped for better lack next time. There
fore, lacking the qualities that make
for gametics, he jumped upon the man
who had won and thumped him so
hard that he died on the way to the
hospital. There I in the heart of every
man who succeeds here below a soft
SHit for the doad game loser. Chicago
