NOVEMBER 24, 1899.
OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER.
Aoitatiox in local politics has begun
in a manner to indicate that a warm
contest should be the result. The result
of the contest "is yet in doubt," which
readers of the Welcome will concede to
be not extremely remarkable at this
stage of the game. Portland Welcome.
Thi re-organization of the democracy
of Multnomah county seems to have
carried with it other elements than
those of harmony. Already the mur
mur of discontent is heard and it bids
fair to erupt in lurid violence- ere the
impending campaign shall have been
fully launched.
The next dictionary that is published
will contain many new words, among
tbem the word, "helara." when a
man knocks about town until 3 o'clock
in the morning and then gets up with a
head like a molasses barrel and a breath
like a slaughter house, he always says
he had a helava time. The word is a
good one and should have a place in the
dictionary.

This nation deplores the losa by death
of its Vice-President, Garret A. Hobart.
As private citizen his career was that
of a successful business man and a good
citizen, while as a public man his con
duct was above reproach and his abilities
unquestioned. He expired at his home
in Patterson, N. J., at 8:30 Tuesday
morning, of heart disease. His burial
will take place Saturday.
Perhaps no place in the world offers
such golden opportunity for labor as
does the Pacific coast. In the line of
manufacturing lumber this is espec
ially marked. With the large develop
ment of the Eastern trade comes a
demand for skilled lumbermen, and
this demand will increase. Any young
man who goes into a mill, makes him
self useful and learns the business,
may hopefully anticipate advancement.
Wages are good, work steady the year
round and good men always needed.
Bom of our ambitious but inconse
quential contemporaries see nothing in
the result of the recent elections that
can be accepted as an endorsement of or
a rebuke to the policies of the adminis
tration. They assert that only hide
bound partisan papers will claim to the
contrary. Such utterances eminate
only from political ostriches who thrust
their heads under their wings when
hard pressed, and deny all light that
political principle or lack of principle
they advocate goes down to defeat when
great issues come up before the people.
ACKNOWLEDGED FACTS.
On page three of "Coin's Financial
School," of which we heard so much a
few years ago, are to be found the fol
lowing lines :
"Hard times are with ns; the country
is distracted ; very few things are mar
ketable at a price above the cost of pro
duction ; penitentiaries, workhouses and
asylums are full; the gold reserve at
Washington is sinking, the government
id luiiiiiux m was w:iu a uiucib in
every department ; a huge debt hangs
like an appalling cloud over the country ;
taxes have assumed the importance of a
mortgage, and fifty per cent of the pub
lic revenues are iiseiy to eo ueimauent:
nungerea ana halt-starved men are
banding into armies and marching to
ward Washington : the crv of distress is
on every hand ; business is paralyzed :
commerce is at a standstill ; riots and
strikes prevail throughout the land."
These lines were written just before
the presidential campaign of 1896, and
were quoted with great emphasis by
populist orators about that time. Every
sentence was a fact, but how the laugh
would be turned should an attempt be
made to stuff such matter down the
throats of the people today. Mr. "Coin"
would not attempt to tell us that such
conditions exist at present.

Beeoee The Mist will again reach its
readers, the people of Columbia county
will have observed the national Thanks
giving holiday. The president of the
United States, in accordance with that
excellent usage, has appointed next
Thursday, November 30th, as a day for
National thanksgiving. The proclama
tion is long, indeed, because the presi
dent enumerated some of the blessings
for which we ought to be thankful.
Surely the people of this county ought
to be thankful. The year has been a pros
perous one for most of ns. There is plenty
of work for the industrious and food for
the hungry. Wages are advancing and
money is plentiful. There are a great j
many reasons why we should be thank
ful. Moreover, there is no reader of
this paper who has not had during the
past year some special blessing which
should make Thanksgiving Day, 1899,
something more than mere form.

Gkkkbal Fitzhuoh Lee, who is in
Washington, in an interview, says that
Cuba, nnder the existing protection of
the United States, is improving every
hour. The people are slowly but surely
rebuilding their war-wasted homes and
repairing their crippled fortunes. He
thinks that life and property are now
secure on the island and that Cubans
generally are not abusing their newly
acquired freedom. This happy condi
tion of things General Lee attributes
largely to the "salutary restraint exer
cised by American military authorities."
The native population, he says, is inex
perienced in both theory and practice of
self government. General Lee realizes
that the United States government is
pledged to grant independence to Cuba
after it has been thoroughly pacified
nd he feels strongly that the pledge
should be fulfil led as swiftly as practi
cable. Until life can be protected by a
purely Cuban government, however, he
thinks the'ielands should remain under
the government of the United States.

tional ministers trom Portland, who
