OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER.
Ni-wsrAPgas may devote column a poo
column of their space in pointing ont
needed reforms and impro rodents, but
much of it is lost effort. For a number
pf years Tin Hist has devoted much
space to the subject of roads in this
county, especially has this been the
ease daring the last year, when we have
aid much concerning the road from
this point to Nehalem valley. With
Certain of individuals the agaitation
brought out mora or less favorable com- j
merit, and by some a vigorous oppoev
tion was forthwith set on foot. Todav
manifestation of hearty support of any
plan to improve the road is evidenced
by persons, who, until recently, if not
rigorously opposing the plan, were but
lukewarm in enthusiasm, to say the
most. Change of heart has been brought
about by personal observation and ex
perience in traveling the road in ques
tion. We extend to every person in this
part of Columbia county a most press
ing invitation to make the trip from St.
Helena to Pittsburg by wagon or buggy,
We are certain the experience will forth
with impress you that our advocacy of
the substantial improvement of the road
was well founded. ''Scheme," cries one
"plan to fleece the public," said another.
Certainly; we are frank to admit it to
have been a scheme a gigantic scheme,
caw by which every resident of Nehalem
valley would have been benefitted, as
well as those on the river front, by Btiuv
Blating businesa and striving to better
the condition of things. In this day
and generation every man is for himself,
and the devil will most certainly take
the hindennoet. Probably it is but the
enforcement of natural law a survival
of the fittest, Man has never accom
plished anything in any age unless the
force of circumstances and conditions
drove him to make an effort. The no
bilities are triumphant only in adversity,
while in prosperity less interest will be
shown. There is no evading the sub
ject; the Nehalem road most be im
proved, and at once, too.
occasional newspaper. When Commis
sioner Binger Hermann appointed men
to protect our timber reserves from de
struction by forest fires hs was accused
of wanting to remunerate his friends
with an office, and that was all his ap
pointments were for. Prattle of that
kind has no foundation in fact, either,
the sensible plan being for each iadividr
oal to render every possible aid to the
forest rangers of this state.
Is our estimation of quality we often
measure it from the standpoint of our
own limited knowledge of today and not
from any accumulation of information
gathered from the experiences and facts
of the past Within the scope of many
recollections that is, those who have
arrived at the age of fifty or sixty years.
there was forty years ago a common ex
pression, so our knowledge of history
prompts us to state, that the forests of
Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota
were inexhaustible. That expression,
which passed as current as coin in its
day, would sound very silly now from
any form of reasoning, when men at
this day give expression to their convic
tions, born of study of the cast, that we
are wasting our forest of fine fir, pine
and cedar, the majority of people regard
them as crazy or a fool. The statement
is current in our midst today that the
timber of this county is inexhaustible.
Do not delude yourself and others with
such ridiculously absurd ideas. Take
to mind the seriousness of conditions
and reason will dictate quite an opposite
conception. Old-time loggers and lum
bermen of this vicinity understand the
idleness of such prattle.' Today it re
quires almost unlimited capital to suc
cessfully operate a logging camp. What
were the conditions twenty or ten years
ago? Ia not the supply Of accessible
timber exhausted? With the modern
apparatus for operating logging camps
and converting the product into lumber
would it not be reasonable to presume
that wonderful inroads on our timber
supply will be made within the next
twenty years T Now is a very proper
time to quote the statements of a num
ber of editors from the great timber
state of the West, Michigan, Wiscon
sin and Minnesota, as they were being
shown through the lumber manufactur
ing plants during their recent visit to
this coast: "The forests of our states
are gone they no longer exist in a small
degree. That which in our boyhood
days was pronounced 'inexhaustible,' is
exhausted, and now where once stood
the fine forests of pine in our states, we
are shipping in lumber from Oregon for
our buildings." There certainly was
warning in their statement that the gov
ernmemt should take vigorous means to
preserve the forests of this state. Noth
ing is more certain than it is a difficult
task to arouse public opinion on this
important subject. We have plenty of
men agitating the labor question, the
immigration question and the free silver
question, but the destruction of our for
eete, which effect the losses to all classes
mnM than all thn nneaHnna wa
mentioned, finds no defenders save an deceased.
That the foremost need of Colum
bia county today is better roads can
not be denied, and that the neces
sity of the people defraying the expense
of improving and having better roads is
a decided condition and by no means a
theory. And it may properly be sug
gested first as last that taxation for the
purpose of making and maintaining
roads is the only means by which a sat
isfactory system can ever be had. The
time has always been when better roads
were demanded, but the opportunity
for securing them has seemed to be hid
den in the obscurenesa of utter impossi
bilities under the ordinary regime. To
perform its duty as a public factor the
county overreached its capabilities in
this respect a few years ago, thrust itself
deep in the chasm of indebtedness in
order to gratify the demands tor roads
and bridge, the latter in most instances
being worthy the effort and expense,
but unfortunately for the welfare of the
county, the former have proven useless
and a burden to such an extent as to al
most swamp the county. But dayftght
seems now about to dawn, and in the
tide of affairs, relief from the burden of
indebtedness ia at baud, as well as an
apparent opportunity to create a fund
for the improvement of roads, the money
to accrue from taxation, and yet the
burden be no greater to carry, lis use
less to indulge in unnecessary comments
on benefits arising from such a course,
but unless something of the kind is done
it will be an easy matter to count the
population of the county with about
three nu inerals. The success with which
the county has met in liquidating its in
debtedness in the past one or two years
places the levying of a tax for road pur
poses within the scope of possibilities.
The public will demand such a course,
and the officials are only too eager to
adopt it. By all means let us have it'

Mrs. Gus Bvnon and daughter. Hae-

Rev's. Ernst and Culver left last Wed
nesday for Houlton, leaving the camp-

and the local pastor.
C. S. McNutt is doinz a irood business
in the lemon trade, especially on these
warm days, everyone drinks" lemonade
and why shouldn't they?
Messrs. J. W. Marsh. Jack Hushes
and Newell McCamm, of Forest Grove,
passed through town last week en route
for Upper Rock creek on a fishing trip.
Fred Zellar informs us that freizhtine
from Houlton is a paying business at
present. He thinks of buying more
horses, as the coming two months will
be busy ones for bim.
Campmeetine has closed and manv
declare it to have been the best ever
held here. The presiding elder. Rev.
Ernst, and Rev. Culver left on Wednes
day, but the meetings continued under
barge oi Kev. Stroup until bunday
evening. The church has been greatly
strengthened by the addition of eighteen
new members, part of whom were old
workers, joining by letters, others new
converts.
Through the negligence of some per
son, fire caught in Otto Malmrten's
fences and hay field last Saturday. By
hard work the bouse was saved. A
large amount of his hay was destroyed
ana a Dig pue ot lumber belonging to A.
Soule was also burned. It seems queer
tnat persona should be so careless when
so murn is said at the present time con
cerning fires. It is hinted that this case
ill be prosecuted and tberebv teach a
deserved lesson.
The present outlook for Nehalem pro
ducts is not as good this year as the av
erage, lne hay crop may equal that of
last year out ttie spring grain will be
sadly behing. in fact it ia doubtful
hetner it will have time to ripen before
the fall rains begin. Many of our farm
ers propose to cut it for hay. Fruit will
be scarce, especially so a compared with
last year's abundance. It is almost too
early to judge concerning the rutabaga
crop, ami we are not propnei enougn
to eay as to whether there will be a
grand stampede of dog salmon or not.

From Sylvan Valley News. Brevad, K. C.
It may be a question whether the edi

Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. We
have known and used this medicine in
onr family for twenty yeara and have
always found it reliable. Inmanycaaea
a doae of thia remedy would gave bonri

We do not believe in depending implic

do believe that if a bottle of Chamber

hand and administered at the inccDtion
of an attack much suffering might be
avoided and in very many cages the pres
