OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER.
uquidatimo me Dear.
r
The . semi-snnaal statement of the
: financial condition of the county, made
by tb several offioera on the 31st of
: March, and which, we print elsewhere
- this week, shows marked improvement
in the condition of financial matters
concerning the county. - The summery
statement of the county clerk , shows
the outstanding debt at that date,
including estimated Interest,' to be f44,
. ' . 638. On March 31st, 1898, the serrjr-an-
v nual statement showed the liabilities of
the count to be $60,000, including in
' terest. At the date last mentioned there
'' was but $3000 paid on the state tax, and
Bone of the school tax had been paid,
' while at the time of issuing the state-
, ment this year the state tax bad been
paid and the cash on hand subject to ap
portionment for school purposeas. . On
the 1st of July 1888, the county was be
hind in the payment of its warrants 27
months. ' Today the county treasurer
issues call for all outstanding warrants
endorsed prior to January 1st, 1898. The
total amount contained in this cAllls
about $11,000,' including interest, the
total of the principal being about $9,600.
Besides this, the rate at which current
taxes is being paid indicates that but a
mall per cent of the tax will remain
unpaid at the close' of the year's busi
ness July 1st. For .the year ending
March Slat, 1899. there bad been $3152
: more of warrants paid than those issued.
Three thousand dollars, more was in the
hands of the treasurer applicable to
payment of warrants, March 31st, 1899,
than on the corresponding date in 1898,
besides $6529 paid for interest on the
outstanding debt. - - ' '

There are leas men in Astoria seekine
employment than probably in any other
city on the coast. There is scarcely a
day that some one is not in the city look
ing lor men to work in logging camps,
sawmills, orat wood-chopping. Although
there are a number of idle men in. As
toria at present, they are the usual influx
of fishermen whe come here before the
opening of the fishing season, and prefer
to take their chance at fishing than to
engage in any other work. V. Dixon, a
farmer of Marshland, has been in Astoria
the past, two days, trying to engage men
to work at wood-chopping. Mr. Dixon
has a contract from the railroad company
to cut 6,000 cords of wood. : He wanted
five men and would pay $1 a cord, and,
besides, would furnish tools and blank
ets. The wood must be two-foot wood,
which would necessarily take more of it
to make a cord, but be said the timber
there is good and a man can easily, cut
three coras a a ay. cor about a week
the men would be employed in building
a road into the timber, after which the
wood-choiminz would commence. He
considered his offer an unusually good
one, as his own team would haul the
wood to the bank for the choppers. Af
ter looking over the city and failing to
find any men, he concluded to go to Port
land, where, he said, he was told be
could find men in the North End. Mr.
Dixon engages in stockraising on his
farm, which is mostly upland, and says
times have improved wonderfully, there
being a ready market and good price for
stock, ss well a for other farm products.
Pork brings 7 cents a pound at Clats
kanie, dressed, and beef sells at Portland
a cents on foot. Veal brings 7 cents
and 8 cents at Portland. Mr: Dixon says
the farmers between Marshland and
Weetport are experiencing boom times.
Logging is ; carried, on exteneively. be
tween these points, and the camps in tbe
vicinity draw almost wholly on the farm
ers for their supplies, which are sold at
wiioiBsaie rates. iit
wnoieeaie rates. Although tributary to
in Portland. Mr. Dixon left for Portlar.fl
last night, and hoped to secure men be-'
fore returning home. I
