While the new school laws appeart4works; of the aggravating and persist-

J various provisions ar constantly being
, ' presented to Superintendent of Public
- ' Instruction Ackerman. . One of the moat
. important yet presented wa went from
Wood burn a- few days ago, where the
election waa close, and each aide wanted
to secure the advantage. There being
aome doubt aa to the right of four people
who owned Jointly some pieces of prop.
' erty to vote, Mr. Ackerman was applied
to. He ruled that "in cases of joint
ownership, as many can vote aa nave
' property, and have their name on the
assessment rolls of 18US." The names
of qualified school electors must appear
on the I8U8 asseeament roll. ,
A quite serious and costly accident
. happened latt Saturday night, when the
,'i seagoing barge Washington, In tow of
the tog damson; ran upon a reef of rocks
imt above oLle.' Tha'tiarge belongs to
Isle 4 Kern', and was used to transport
rock from the 'Columbia river to Gray's
harbor, where that material is ucd In
the eonstruntionf the government jetty,
and at the time tha barge stranded aiie
was laden with a cargo of that material.
The boat did not sink, however, until
Sunday forenoon, but it Is said the wreck
. now lie In 140 feet of "water. The boat
and Its cargo wa Insured for $25,000.
and although a wrecking crew i now at
work, there it soma doubt entertained
aa to whether the stranded boat can be
awd. ,
When the state aids the counties to
improve the road it simply taxes both
city and country for Uiat purpose. A
road ia really , the property of uie" state,
in one sense, aa it ia tree to the residents
of the ci ties, and ciur.be; used by anyone.
But the farmers should not wait for state,
aid to improve the roads, as they cannot
afford to haul their produce over roads
that are almost impassable. The tax on
each farmer for road purposes Is small
compared with the benellt and advant
ages derived.

AMERICA IN COMMISSION.
The New Boa Ia Alt That Wa An
llcipated Iter Her.
Captain Good's new steamer, America,
built for the Slough run, to take the
place of the Young America, has been
completed and is now on the regular run,
going into commission Tuesday last. A
trial trip waa made with the new boat
from Portland to thia city last Sunday
afternoon, and the performance of the
little beauty was highly pleasing. On
her arrival here she waa boarded by
many of the people, who thoroughly
inspected tbe craft and pronounced her
a complete auecess. She is, without ex
ception, the most convenient boat of
her kind ever launched in these waters,
and her speed and appointments are
all tliat I er owner planned for ber.
The new boat is 101 feet, ten inches In
length, overall, and twenty feet wide.
overall, on the cabin deck; fourteen
feet at the water line. She does not dif
fer greatly in appearance, however, from
the old boat, yet the difference is all
improvement. There are passage ways
the entire distance around the boat on
the outside of the cabins, on to wiiich
doors open from both the after cabins,
tbe ladies' cabin being entirely shut off
from other portions of the boat, save
the companion wars around either side.
This boat haa greater passenger and
freinht-carrving capacity than the old
one, and ber speed undoubtedly greater.
captain uocxt has at ail times sup
plied a splendid service for the people
along the Slough, and his effort to fur
nish a better rervice and better accom
modations should be appreciated and
rewarded bv an undivided support bv
all the people. Without such service as
haa been given in the past it would be
impossible for the farmers and dairy
men to successfully conduct their busi
ness, aa tbe little boat affords tneane
by which the products along that water
way are taken to tbe Portland market
every day in the year, arriving in the
city at such an hour as to give the pro
ducer tne advantage of tne forenoon
market. -
Better accommodation will also be af
forded the St. Helens people, aa it ia the
intention for the new boat to start from
this city not earlier than 7 o'clock in the
morning, as it is expect that the in
creased speed of this boat will enable
her to reach Portland at the usual hour
after departing from St. Helena at the
time mentioned.

Editors are tbe first to hear of gross
indiscretions of men and women, tilings
unlit for publication, intrigues, clandes
tine meetings', wins suppers for two, the
moonlight walk, the Intimate friend,
girls gone astray, flirtations with married
women, amours of married men in fact
all neighborhood scandal. Editors gen
erally know all the naughty doings iu a
community, no matter how secret. If
one-half they knew to be true waa pub
lished, divorce suits would follow,' in
some case social ostracism ; in others,
shotguns and gore, desolate homes, im
prisonment, lynching, shame, humilia
tion and misery. The editor learns so
much of the slmmt and hypocracy of
life it is a wonder he believe in any
thing, on earth or hereafter. And strange
a it may appear, propie wno are iouu
est in their abuse of the editor usually I
owe their standing in society to his for-;
bearsune. Like Ajai denying the light
ning they love to make a grand-stand ,
play, knowing full well that it will not
change the 'result. j
