Prof. C. II. Jones, principal of Park
School, was given an examination in
the city recorder's court yesterday
afternoon and acquitted of the charge
ot atsault aud battety, alleged to have
been committed on August Burt, ou
the 4th Inst. The state was represented
by Chas. L. MoNary, acting deputy
prosecuting attorney, S. T.Bichardson
appearing for Prof. Jones. The prose
cution showed that the boy had been
severely punished, but witnesses for
the defense testified as to the character
and general deportment of the lad,
which was not the very best, In uco,
leaving the natural deduction to be
drawn that the pupil deserved the
punishment be leceived. While the
teacher may have been a little severe
in his punishment of the lad, the testi
mony failed to show that he was ex
cessive in the boy's chastisement. Tbe
testimony as introduced at the trial
Showed very clearly that the boy was
stubborn, impudent and insolent, and
no doubt deserved whipping. -Salem
Statesman. It will be remembered
that Prof. Jones was at oue time prin

river to swell rapidly, and considerable
driftwood is being oarried with the
ourrent on its rush towards the ocean.
This, coupled with the heavy fog pre
vailing for aeveral days, makes it quite
dangerous for navigation, and extra
precaution is necessary. One of these
pieces of driftwood srot mixed up with
the starboard wheel on the Potter, with
the result that the guard rail was
smashed into splinters and several
buckets on the wheel demolished. The
breaking of the guard rail allowed tbe
wheel to drop from its fastenings, leav
ing the boat in a crippled condition.
The damage will be repaired in a few
days, and in the meantime the steamer
Thompson will cover the route.
A Quaker once sent his watch to a
